  • Magic of Mid Century Modernism

Thank you for the wonderful podcast, the interviews are so good and provide so much information. I’ve read many books and toured many projects over the last 30 + years but this podcast has provided such a full and evocative picture on the People, context of so many great known and lesser known projects.

Keep up the great interviews, have passed on many to my architect, developer and friends who enjoy mid modern!

  • Still a waste of time.

Thought I’d give this podcast a second chance, but nothing has changed. The hosts are smug, the music is annoying, and while the guests are great, too much time is spent on tangents. Do I really care what a British architect thinks about American football? No. I care what the British architect thinks about midcentury modernist architecture.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#462/Patrik Schumacher + Elias Tabache + Musical Guest Karrin Alyson
Q: What are the biggest regulatory challenges you face in Europe vs. the United States?
European planning regimes tend to be more politicized and controlled, creating delays and constraining risk-taking; in the U.S., there can be more openness to private initiative and higher tolerance for bold forms within envelopes.
#462/Patrik Schumacher + Elias Tabache + Musical Guest Karrin Alyson
Q: Patrik, how did you get into parametricism and how does it differ from traditional, square-based design?
Parametricism arises from a flexible set of rules and curves that respond to site and program; it enables a fluid, adaptive architecture that remains coherent across levels and surroundings.
#461/USModernist Retro: Ernst Wagner + Eric Lloyd Wright
Q: What was it like to apprentice with your grandfather at Taliesin?
Eric describes a hands-on, 'learning by doing' environment where apprentices worked side by side with Frank Lloyd Wright, receiving critique and participating in the design and construction process.
#461/USModernist Retro: Ernst Wagner + Eric Lloyd Wright
Q: What was Paul Rudolph's situation in the US during the rise of postmodernism and how did that affect his reception abroad?
Ernst notes that postmodernism rejected modernist work in the US, pushing Rudolph to work increasingly in Asia where his work gained recognition despite the backlash at home.
#461/USModernist Retro: Ernst Wagner + Eric Lloyd Wright
Q: What was it like working on the Beekman Place project and how did it evolve into a public space for architecture?
Ernst explains that Beekman Place evolved from a private living arrangement into a venue with added floors to serve as a meeting place for architecture enthusiasts, with plans to host exhibits and engage the architectural community.
