  • Magic of Mid Century Modernism

Thank you for the wonderful podcast, the interviews are so good and provide so much information. I’ve read many books and toured many projects over the last 30 + years but this podcast has provided such a full and evocative picture on the People, context of so many great known and lesser known projects.

Keep up the great interviews, have passed on many to my architect, developer and friends who enjoy mid modern!

  • Still a waste of time.

Thought I’d give this podcast a second chance, but nothing has changed. The hosts are smug, the music is annoying, and while the guests are great, too much time is spent on tangents. Do I really care what a British architect thinks about American football? No. I care what the British architect thinks about midcentury modernist architecture.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#456/Tom Gluck + Nick Ferrell + Mark Lamster + Special Musical Guest Jon Secada
Q: Nick, how did Modeline influence the broader lighting industry beyond furniture design?
Modeline helped popularize biomorphic lighting that could harmonize with mid-century furniture while introducing its own sculptural, almost living forms; this fostered a distinct identity in modern lighting that went beyond mere function.
#455/Uruguay with David Coffey + Neutra with Cindy Olnick + Musical Guests Lenore Raphael and Chris Hodgkins
Q: Tell me more about Uruguay and why it's significant for architecture, particularly Art Deco.
Uruguay has a strong educational base in Montevideo that attracted international figures like Corbusier in 1929, leading to a diverse inventory from the 1920s to the 1970s across multiple styles, with Neutra visiting and influencing local professionals; ongoing university archives and restoration efforts are expanding access and public awareness.
#454/NCModernism with Phil Szostak and Ben Taylor + Musical Guests Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks
Q: And how was that making the shift from your own shop to this giant corporation?
It was really hard and came after a big project that led to a legal dispute; joining with a larger firm helped save the practice and provided opportunities to grow without losing the core heritage of the work.
#452/USModernist Retro: Bjarke Ingels + Musical Guest Halie Loren
Q: How do you view the role of language and storytelling in architecture—how do you communicate complex ideas to a broad public?
Ingels discusses that the purpose of communication is to transmit insight or sensibility, and that success depends on effectively translating ideas into accessible language or graphics so everyone can grasp the concept behind the design.
#452/USModernist Retro: Bjarke Ingels + Musical Guest Halie Loren
Q: I'm willing to guess that no one has ever mispronounced your last name. How do you pronounce it?
Bjarke explains the pronunciation by spelling it out and noting a letter-by-letter cadence, emphasizing his Danish origin and the pronunciation quirks that come with international attention.
