Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Number Sense and Subitizing (Ep 18)
Q: Do you think it is more prevalent than we recognize?
Yes, wider recognition will increase the number of kids being diagnosed, but it doesn't mean that the actual prevalence has changed. The prevalence, you have to do a proper prevalence test.
Number Sense and Subitizing (Ep 18)
Q: So how can parents and educators use the data that the neuropsychologist may be providing them with to help them determine is this more domain general or is this more specific?
It depends how they've been trained, and there are lots of conditions that are more readily recognized, like dyslexia or autism or ADHD. If your kid's bad at maths and they get tested and discover they have another diagnosis, the further checks for dyscalculia often don't happen.
Number Sense and Subitizing (Ep 18)
Q: Can you explain a little bit more about those differences between domain-general and specific?
There are lots of domain-general abilities. Reasoning is one. Working memory is another. You can be good or bad at calculation when these domain-general abilities are either impaired or spared.
Supporting Students Behind in Numeracy (Ep 20)
Q: What are some things that we should be keeping in mind in consideration of teaching math facts to students with dyslexia dyscalculia?
Teach mental strategies rather than rote memorization, starting with foundational concepts like doubling and addition, to aid understanding and retention.
Dyscalculia Diagnostic Creation (Ep 15)
Q: What challenges did you encounter while developing the FAM?
Dr. Feifer discusses the complexities of assessment development, including the need to understand various pathways in the brain and the challenge of creating effective diagnostic tools.
