  • In an age of technology, being intentional to tune in here especially matters.

In the frantic pace of life and with our phones that are brilliant at distracting us, we must be diligent about finding intentional ways to live undistracted and the abundant life we were MADE to live.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

"Consciously facing death empowers us to better live." - Oliver Christen S16E10
Q: What was the experience like for you and your family during the 24 days at home?
It was a journey of presence, processing waves of emotion, and striving to support her in peace. Letters, flowers, and conversations helped maintain connection, and the process underscored that a good death is deeply personal and about accompanying the person with love and respect.
"Consciously facing death empowers us to better live." - Oliver Christen S16E10
Q: What led you to engage with the idea of ending life on her terms, and how did her illness influence that decision?
Her history of independence, fear of losing agency, and the belief that quality of life mattered more than simply prolonging life guided the choice. The VSED path emerged as a way to die with dignity while avoiding burdensome medical interventions.
"Consciously facing death empowers us to better live." - Oliver Christen S16E10
Q: Can you introduce us to your mom and the kind of life that she lived?
My mom was WWII-impacted, a doctor who valued activity, nature, and independence. She lived fully, stayed engaged, and prepared for a life with purpose up to the end, which shaped the decision to pursue a natural, dignified end when needed.
"Letting ourselves quit can expand our potential." - Nir Eyal S16E06
Q: You did some research about the role of prayer and ritual in helping us break through limitations. What did you find?
Nir describes how prayer-like practices can yield psychological benefits even without faith, noting that adopting a protocol or ritual can increase pain tolerance, happiness, and social connection when approached with a secular mindset; the key is the consistent, reflective practice rather than the supernatural belief.
"Letting ourselves quit can expand our potential." - Nir Eyal S16E06
Q: So what was it that prompted you to look into the science of belief?
Nir explains that his earlier work on motivation and habit led him to study how beliefs shape actions, and how misunderstanding beliefs can derail people from applying knowledge. He emphasizes the need to distinguish between knowledge and the beliefs that govern whether we act on that knowledge.
