Under the Influence is a deep dive into social media, a place haunted by aspirational marketing where it feels like every other person is a social media influencer trying to sell you something, all while posed in perfect houses that never seem to get messy. And behind this airbrushed perfection is money, so much money. Billions and billions of dollars. Journalist and mom Jo Piazza looks at how we ... more

  • Stop telling us what a “real woman” is

Latest episode about weight loss drugs lost me in the first two minutes when said that that every woman in her 30s, 40s, or 50s is either taking or secretly googling these drugs, and that she’s sick of all these people pretending they stay in shape without drugs. She ends with the classic “I want to hear from real women.” As a woman in her 30s who has not been “secretly googling” weight loss drugs and does stay in shape via diet and exercise only, I didn’t realize I don’t count as a “real woman”... more

  • Poor Jo

The earlier episodes were very well researched and sincere. Now it’s turned into Jo’s neuroticism show. It just screams major coping to me. She whines about it all. You can also tell she used to work for the gossip magazines because the jealousy and pettiness just oozes out of her. She wants you to know that if you’re not fat and liberal and miserable and hate your husband like her -then you’re just wrong and she’s here to save your soul because she’s the smartest. It’s okay to get old Jo! Bit... more

  • Did not feel very self-aware

I listened to the “cult of skinny” episode, which is about social media perpetuating eating disorder content—an important and fascinating topic, and I appreciate the host’s intention to engage with it. But then the first ad of the episode is the host telling us about a metabolism tracker, used in part for “weight management”. I’m sorry but how can I continue to listen to you talk about influencers peddling weight loss content to their audience when you are literally doing the same thing to us, i... more

Grab Bag: Where Did Love Taza Go?
Q: What was your gateway influencer?
Ali's gateway influencer was Naomi Davis, also known as Love Taza. Jo shared a similar experience.
How History Erased Mothers
Q: What did the reverence for the Virgin Mary do to the idea of motherhood?
While it elevated maternity, it set an unattainable ideal for mortal women, creating a cycle of guilt and shame for not living up to these impossibly high standards.
How History Erased Mothers
Q: How difficult was this research to do?
Researching the history of mothering is challenging due to the lack of evidence or sources written by mothers themselves, and much of the history has been recorded by men about male interests, leading to a skewed perspective.
How History Erased Mothers
Q: Why do we need and why do we deserve to reclaim the radical history of mothering right now?
We are in a resurgence of rhetoric around what mothering should be, and we should look to the history of motherhood to hope for a future that moves beyond reductive ideas about what women should do with their bodies and lives.
Sunday Nice Things: Birth With Babylist
Q: What can we control when it comes to giving birth?
You can control how you and your partner prepare, nutrition, energy, and managing expectations.
