  • Super!

Everyone should listen from medical professionals to people with the injury and even just any human — understanding this injury and what’s beneath the wheelchair that you can’t see, would never understand otherwise.

  • Someone with SCI

This podcast is great. I appreciate the effort to continue the movement to cure paralysis. Unfortunately I feel as though a lot of the community/ medical field has given up on trying to find a cure and excepting things as they happen. We all deal with things in different ways, but anyone living with SCI knows how difficult life can be living with this. Never give up! I appreciate the the genuine spirits of the people that do this podcast along with all the medical professionals who work hard at ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Wandering Nerve (Episode 137)
Q: How does vagus nerve stimulation lead to enhanced neuroplasticity?
Vagus nerve stimulation sends signals that help restructure connections in the brain and spinal cord, aiming to improve motor functions and daily activities in individuals with spinal cord injuries.
The Wandering Nerve (Episode 137)
Q: What are the limits to neuroplasticity and how can we open those windows?
Current evidence shows recovery is greatest early on due to decreasing inflammation rather than plasticity limits. Importantly, recovery can occur irrespective of how much time has passed since injury.
Giving A Hand (Episode 136)
Q: How do you foresee the long-term support for technologies like the ones you're developing?
The plan includes proactive agreements with researchers to ensure ongoing support for any implanted technology and assisting individuals who already have systems in place.
Giving A Hand (Episode 136)
Q: What are your thoughts on the barrier to the pipeline of translation into the population and implementation?
Commercialization is a heavy barrier due to high costs and multiple steps in the regulatory process that create challenges for researchers.
Taking a Stand
Q: What challenges does the FDA present in relation to spinal cord injury treatments?
David discusses the complexities regarding heterogeneity and how a lack of market incentive affects device approval processes by the FDA.
