  • Low quality

Low quality of sound, as it’s very hard to listen to it. It’s dull as well! I was trying to get more interesting history about “David” but did not last. It’s so bad.

  • What it says on the tin

This really does give the feel of waking up in a different era. Every episode I’ve heard has been enthralling. I must just mention Felipe Fernandez Armesto who talked about history interrogating the dead. This is the fascination! Must just say that his accent is so similar to Bojo that I almost had a nasty shock. Did they go to the same school?

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Sinclair McKay: Founding the Home Guard (1940)
Q: How did the Home Guard's image in popular culture compare with the actual history you describe in the book?
The Home Guard was often remembered through the lighthearted lens of Dad's Army, but the real history shows serious preparation, weapon improvisation, and a social revolution where ordinary people from all walks of life took on roles in national defense and even pressured for women's arming and broader civilian participation.
Sinclair McKay: Founding the Home Guard (1940)
Q: If you could travel back in time to a specific calendar year to have a look perhaps at the Home Guard, which year would you like to pick?
I would like to pick 1940, the year when Local Defence Volunteers became the Home Guard and Britain faced the immediate threat of invasion, offering a vivid snapshot of civilian courage, improvisation, and social mobilization.
Don Hollway: King Olaf Tryggvason of the Vikings (1000)
Q: If you could travel back through time to take a look at Olaf, with the hope of maybe seeing him a little bit closer and understanding him a little better, which year would you like to pick?
The year 1000, the last year of his reign, is the one that best crystallizes his legend and influence.
Gary Mead : The Young Bernard Montgomery and the First World War (1914)
Q: If you could travel back to one year to understand Monty better, which year would you choose?
Mead selects 1914 to examine Montgomery as a new officer, his killer instinct, and the dynamics of early war experience that shaped his later career.
Edoardo Albert : The Venerable Bede (716)
Q: If you could travel back to 716, what would you want to see or confirm about Bede at work?
The guest imagines Bede in his cell at Jarrow, scribbling with a Roman-inspired script, surrounded by a vibrant library and the new habit of careful, documented history, with a strong emphasis on the scholarly environment that supported his work.
