  • Low quality

Low quality of sound, as it’s very hard to listen to it. It’s dull as well! I was trying to get more interesting history about “David” but did not last. It’s so bad.

  • What it says on the tin

This really does give the feel of waking up in a different era. Every episode I’ve heard has been enthralling. I must just mention Felipe Fernandez Armesto who talked about history interrogating the dead. This is the fascination! Must just say that his accent is so similar to Bojo that I almost had a nasty shock. Did they go to the same school?

  • One of the best history podcasts

A podcast that is not scared to go beyond 30 minutes, we don’t all have the attention span of goldfish like Dan Snows outfit think. A good podcast and informative. I’ve not spotted that many inaccuracies. Always find it weird that 99% of podcasts are based on people with books to flog. Surely people are out there with a story to tell who haven’t just published a book on the subject.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Veronica Buckley: The Hapsburgs and the French Revolution (1790)
Q: If you could travel back to 1790, what year and moment would you choose and why?
Buckley explains her choice of 1790 for its mix of hopeful reforms, dynastic politics, and the looming crisis from the French Revolution, using three scenes to illustrate the era's tensions between enlightened despotism, nationalist currents, and the fragility of reform.
Nicholas Walton: The End of the Dutch Empire (1950)
Q: If you could travel back through time to a single calendar year to understand the history of the Netherlands better perhaps, which year would you like to pick?
It would be 1950, because it sits at the hinge between the end of empire after the war and the reordering of Europe and the world, showing how a small country redefines itself in the wake of decolonization and upheaval.
Sean Cunningham: King Henry VII and a Year of Peril (1497)
Q: If you could travel back through time to make a bit more sense of Henry VII and have a look at him, what year would you pick?
1497, a year of massive tumult and problem for the Tudors, because it tests the dynasty's survival through north-south conflict, Warbeck's intrigue, and internal rebellion, offering a lens on Henry's political craft under pressure.
Sarah Wise: The Undesirables (1947)
Q: What kind of societal attitudes were prevalent regarding those deemed 'undesirable'?
At the time, there was a significant stigma surrounding the poor and mentally ill, often resulting in severe legislative measures like the Mental Deficiency Act, which was aimed at controlling their reproduction and social standing.
Sarah Wise: The Undesirables (1947)
Q: Can you say a little bit about eugenics, what it was and how it came to prominence?
Eugenics was a concept coined by Francis Galton in 1883, explaining phenomena observed in social policy relating to the behavior of certain demographics, particularly in relation to the idea that feeble-minded individuals should not reproduce.
