  • Low quality

Low quality of sound, as it’s very hard to listen to it. It’s dull as well! I was trying to get more interesting history about “David” but did not last. It’s so bad.

  • What it says on the tin

This really does give the feel of waking up in a different era. Every episode I’ve heard has been enthralling. I must just mention Felipe Fernandez Armesto who talked about history interrogating the dead. This is the fascination! Must just say that his accent is so similar to Bojo that I almost had a nasty shock. Did they go to the same school?

  • One of the best history podcasts

A podcast that is not scared to go beyond 30 minutes, we don’t all have the attention span of goldfish like Dan Snows outfit think. A good podcast and informative. I’ve not spotted that many inaccuracies. Always find it weird that 99% of podcasts are based on people with books to flog. Surely people are out there with a story to tell who haven’t just published a book on the subject.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Meghan Kobza: The Magnificent Masquerade (1768)
Q: What vivid details from Agneta Yorke's experience stand out about the first 1768 masquerade?
Agneta's account highlights the wardrobe crisis, the social pressures around dress, the long duration of the event, the heat and sensory overload inside the theater, and the tension between personal fortune and public spectacle as her defined social position is tested by the event's extravagance.
Meghan Kobza: The Magnificent Masquerade (1768)
Q: Why did you choose 1768 as the focal year for the masquerade scene?
1768 marked the revival after a 12-year gap, sparked by the Danish king's visit and connecting to Queen-connected circles; it represents a turning point where private residences began to resemble grand public spectacles again, with intensified social display and a reestablished calendar of masquerades at the King's Theatre.
Rory Naismith: Offa King of the Mercians (796)
Q: What would you like to see next in this imagined year's scenes?
I would want to see the continuation of correspondence with Charlemagne, specifically the letter Offa wrote in response to this earlier exchange, to hear his voice and learn how he described his achievements and requests to the Frankish king.
Rory Naismith: Offa King of the Mercians (796)
Q: If you could travel back through time to a calendar year, which one would you pick?
I think 796 would be a good year, a climactic point in Offa's reign when he dies and Mercia undergoes major changes, offering rich material for understanding how personal leadership translated into broad political shifts.
Veronica Buckley: The Hapsburgs and the French Revolution (1790)
Q: If you could travel back to 1790, what year and moment would you choose and why?
Buckley explains her choice of 1790 for its mix of hopeful reforms, dynastic politics, and the looming crisis from the French Revolution, using three scenes to illustrate the era's tensions between enlightened despotism, nationalist currents, and the fragility of reform.
