  • Low quality

Low quality of sound, as it’s very hard to listen to it. It’s dull as well! I was trying to get more interesting history about “David” but did not last. It’s so bad.

  • What it says on the tin

This really does give the feel of waking up in a different era. Every episode I’ve heard has been enthralling. I must just mention Felipe Fernandez Armesto who talked about history interrogating the dead. This is the fascination! Must just say that his accent is so similar to Bojo that I almost had a nasty shock. Did they go to the same school?

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Taylor Downing: On The Brink Of Nuclear Armageddon (1983)
Q: What role did individual actors like Stanislav Petrov play in preventing disaster, and what does that say about human judgment under pressure?
Petrov's decision to dismiss the alarm and reboot the system illustrates how a single, level-headed judgment can override automated signals and avert a catastrophe that would have otherwise escalated due to flawed technology and protocol push.
Taylor Downing: On The Brink Of Nuclear Armageddon (1983)
Q: Could you explain the core idea behindMutual Assured Destruction and why it framed so much of Cold War thinking?
MAD posited that neither side would initiate a nuclear strike if it guaranteed total retaliation, creating a precarious balance where the fear of annihilation kept both sides from acting, even under pressure.
Taylor Downing: On The Brink Of Nuclear Armageddon (1983)
Q: The Cuban missile crisis is often cited as the epitome of near-catastrophe in the Cold War. Do you think the 1983 near-miss was as dangerous, or even more so, and why?
Downing argues that 1983 presented risks as great as or greater than 1962 because the threat existed in a hidden, pervasive way—through advanced early-warning systems, thermonuclear arsenals, and ambiguous signals—where misinterpretations could trigger a nuclear exchange.
[Live] Paul O'Keeffe: After The Battle of Trafalgar (1806)
Q: Where would you physically place yourself to witness the Nelson funeral or the afterward mood in London?
The spaces along Whitehall and the Strand, watching the procession and imagining how a spectator like the Duchess of Devonshire would have experienced the moment from a window or vantage point, while considering the vast scale of the crowd and the ceremony.
[Live] Paul O'Keeffe: After The Battle of Trafalgar (1806)
Q: If you could travel back through time three times, what year would you like to live in?
1806, a time after Trafalgar but still dominated by its news, allowing a glimpse into the national mood as Nelson's death and funeral unite and divide the country.
