It reads like a movie script. The year? 2003. The mission? Defeat hundreds of challengers to save the state of California and become its leader. But this wasn't a movie... it was a real-life election for governor that featured adult film stars, sumo wrestlers, comedians, and ended with the election of action star Arnold Schwarzenegger. In Total Recall: California’s Political Circus, CNN’s Chief Po... more

And just like that, we’ve arrived at the final chapter of our story: The 2021 California Recall. There are plenty of echoes of the 2003 recall in the latest effort to oust Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. It was a complete circus... but with a compl... more

Doesn’t quite live up to its promise. Glosses over details and pretty much feels like they’re reading a Wikipedia article most of the time. Best part is hearing from Gov. Schwarzenegger, though that’s obviously a one sided view of things. Was hoping for something more like slow burn, but it does scratch an itch.
This series really makes listening to politics fun.
Thanks, Dana and team, for the great series!
The similarity of “celebrity” overpowering candidate qualifications, the repeated disregard of politicians to provide for citizens welfare (read: failed grids) and the hinkie high jinks of California recalls could be totally demoralizing...yet Bash et al make this well researched history lesson entertaining and informative!
Good storytelling so far ans helpful context b/c I barely remember 2003 anymore. I wished all the episodes were released at once because it is a good binge listen. Also good to use some of the episodes in course lessons
And now it’s China with Gavin Newsom. It was not a Republican recall. I’m liberal and he’s a terrible governor and this podcast seems to havevaerved the purpose of implying the recent recall is a circus. The real circus is American and Global politics. Not voters desperate for change.
