Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Kelsey Dillow
Q: What is your biggest piece of practical advice for someone starting wet plate photography?
Don't rush to buy new gear; you can make great plates with inexpensive or repurposed materials, and learn to mix your own chemistry to cut costs while prioritizing safety and hands-on practice.
Kelsey Dillow
Q: Can you describe your studio setup and how you balance pop-up shoots with a fixed studio space?
I work in a barn studio with a travel darkroom for on-location shoots and a larger external space for silver-gelatin work; pop-ups are fast-paced and help anchor my presence in the community, while studio sessions allow deeper, slower portraits with natural backgrounds.
Kelsey Dillow
Q: How did your background in other crafts and your time at Airmount influence your wet plate practice?
Working in diverse craft environments taught me the value of community and collaboration, which pushed me to pursue photography as a shared, studio-based practice rather than a solitary pursuit, and eventually led to the Whistle Pig Farms setup and collaborative workshops.
Kelsey Dillow
Q: What first drew you to wet plate photography and how did your initial exposure happen?
I was inspired after seeing Civil War-era images in a college history of photography class; the images felt like stepping into another world. A traveling tin type photographer later demonstrated the process, which solidified my path and led me to seek out a community-based learning approach.
