  • Excited for More!

As a first time parent, I’m eager to help my child grow up with a lot of tools to help them thrive into adulthood, many things I’m now only learning as an adult myself. I really enjoyed this podcast and can’t wait to hear more - the length and detail was super helpful and I appreciated the level of helping parents from a lens that they would see vs. a clinician.

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Q&A: How to Maintain a Positive Relationship with Your Child
Q: Our seventh question asks for micro habits for families who barely have time for long heart-to-hearts. What can they do in the cracks to keep warmth and connection?
Focus on brief, meaningful moments during transitions. Highlight family virtues like flexibility or engagement, offer quick questions to invite sharing, and assure children that downtime is available if needed. These small, consistent interactions accumulate into lasting warmth.
Q&A: How to Maintain a Positive Relationship with Your Child
Q: If you could give a parent one phrase to say to their child tonight, to instantly boost the warmth in the house, what would it be?
Notice something you were proud of them for that day, or simply say, I am so proud to be your parent. Expressing genuine emotion and appreciation helps ground the relationship and signals unconditional support.
Q&A: How to Maintain a Positive Relationship with Your Child
Q: I grew up in a very traditional home where parenting was all about because I said so. How do I stop reacting from my own childhood baggage and stay in that wise parent headspace?
Acknowledge your own models but aim to integrate warmth with boundaries. Maintain authority while incorporating moments of connection—talk about your expectations after a productive task, and show interest in your child's world. The goal is to be tangible, steady, and nonjudgmental in your approach.
Q&A: How to Maintain a Positive Relationship with Your Child
Q: My daughter is 15 and has hit a wall of silence. How do you keep a relationship warm when the other person is actively trying to freeze you out?
Treat transitions as opportunities to engage with behavior descriptions, reflections, and praise rather than interrogating or directing. Describe what you observe, reflect what they say, and praise their efforts. Over weeks this can lower defensiveness, invite disclosure, and rebuild warmth.
Q&A: How to Maintain a Positive Relationship with Your Child
Q: I have three kids. With two of them, the warmth comes easily. But with my middle child, our personalities clash. Is it possible to build a positive relationship when you feel fundamentally different?
Absolutely. You can build strong bonds by explicitly expressing devotion to each child's unique interests and by staying curious about what matters to them. Communicate that you are here for them individually, and find shared activities or topics where you can connect, even if they don't share your interests.
