  • More Sean, Less Scott please

I’d give this 4 maybe even 5 stars but Scott incessantly interrupts Sean and takes over the conversation for minutes on end before Sean gets to speak again.

I want to hear Sean’s takes and opinions. I don’t want to hear Scott drone on and on and on.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Cultural Update: World Cup Faith; When Faith is Just an App; The No-Human Future
Q: What does the New Yorker piece imply about the church's role in politics, and how should Christians respond to calls for a more compassionate and inclusive faith?
The guest argues that faith historically intersects with politics, but proposes a countercultural, winsome approach focused on love, mercy, and neighbor-helping ministry rather than political power, urging humility in public engagement.
Cultural Update: World Cup Faith; When Faith is Just an App; The No-Human Future
Q: Is church discipline still possible today? How should a listener approach discipline when people leave churches rather than submit to leadership?
The guest suggests a robust membership framework helps discipline work, noting the need for a context where leaders can address unrepentant behavior, while acknowledging that many people leave churches, which undermines the redemptive aim of discipline.
The Desecration of Man (With Carl Trueman)
Q: Why is IVF particularly troubling from your perspective beyond personal hardship?
IVF is seen as commodifying children and enabling eugenic impulses, shifting the role of biology from a gift to a product, and reshaping societal norms about who counts as a person deserving life.
The Desecration of Man (With Carl Trueman)
Q: How does your anthropology explain the current cultural moment and the rise of transgressive attitudes?
Trueman argues that modernity, fueled by Enlightenment thought and technological advances, undermines fixed human nature and teleology, leading people to redefine themselves through inner feelings, autonomy, and rebellion against traditional moral structures.
Cultural Update: Rethinking Just War; Screen-Free Summer; Separation of Church and State
Q: Rick, given the pope's view that the just war concept is outdated, what is your take on how Christians should engage with this idea today?
Rick argues that we shouldn't throw out the entire just war tradition, but we should update it to account for new realities—nuclear implications, AI-enabled decision-making, and broader civilian exposure—while still upholding core biblical principles like self-defense and the protection of noncombatants.
