  • Clueless

Sorry but Shadi has got to be one of the least insightful people out there speaking about politics. He seems to think that the United States should exist to uplift Middle Eastern countries and constituencies and that if these entities are not democratic then they cannot be expected to adhere to any standards — that’s the responsibility of others I guess. And at the same time don’t you dare point out the bad behavior of these non democratic actors who apparently the US should be committed to the ... more

  • Might be done

As a long time listener, I might just be done with this podcast. Episodes with Shadi and Damir have become very one note based on their personal ticks and favorite lines of criticism of those they don’t like. No real substantive discussion of these issues with people who can offer any counterpoints, just their repetitive grievances.

  • Could use more listening

Really appreciate the frequent voices of Christine and Sam; it seems like they actually keep to the idea of getting at "first principles" rather than wading into dollar store political philosophy. On the whole it seems like there needs to be some better organization of topics and discussion. More listening and asking questions. Some episodes, I feel like I'm walking in a "DC Bro" dive bar near the Hill. If this podcast is backed by Aspen, I wish they'd push for better clarity.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

What Ails the Left?
Q: How can liberalism balance autonomy with collective goals like communal facilities and public goods?
The discussion suggests a middle ground where autonomy is protected while public provisions (sports facilities, parks) support human development; the state should avoid overbearing moral prescriptions but can still endorse broad, shared goods.
What Ails the Left?
Q: Jonny, what do you mean by justice being the absence of injustice, and why is that a weak foundation for a future left vision?
He argues that negative definitions of justice often lack the energy and forward-looking drive that a positive vision requires; the left should articulate a more complete conception of the good life that guides political action, not just reduce harm.
Cameron Kasky on How Israel Lost America
Q: How do you see foreign policy changing within the Democratic Party, given donor influence and generational shifts?
He argues that money and donor networks shape party norms, but he remains optimistic about a multi-generational push for a more anti-war, human-rights-centered approach, citing examples from local campaigns and the broader movement toward accountability on Middle East policy.
Cameron Kasky on How Israel Lost America
Q: What sparked your shift from a pro-Palestine stance to a more nuanced view on Israel and the occupation?
Cameron explains that growing up in a Zionist milieu, exposure to both Israeli and Palestinian perspectives, and direct engagement with the realities of occupation led him to re-evaluate simplistic narratives, emphasizing human rights and international law while acknowledging the complexities involved.
Holiday Special: The Case for a New American Founding
Q: Osita, in a polarized America, how can democracy stand against mob rule?
I argue for the creation of a more majoritarian system, where overlaps and differences create dynamic democracy and allow multiple majorities to coexist and compete politically.
