  • Great resource !

Loving listening to this podcast as a relatively experienced coach but not at the younger ages. This has really helped simplify and streamlining our practice plans with relevant skills/ drills for younger ages ! Thanks:)

  • Great volleyball pod on coaching youth teams

Love this pod, I coach 8th grade volleyball and this year I am trying a 6-3 instead of a 5-1 rotation by position. No longer specializing positions or putting up a block when girls can’t jump high enough to block anyways. Keep up the good work, it’s appreciated!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

10 Questions with Oscar "Digger" Graybill Part 1
Q: What were the major changes in your coaching responsibilities as you moved from Hoover and college to UCSD and beyond?
The biggest shift was taking on more off-the-court duties—scheduling, recruiting, and program management—while still applying coaching knowledge. The experience at UCSD highlighted the need to balance being a head coach with administrative demands, and to maintain focus on coaching fundamentals while navigating the broader responsibilities of running a program.
10 Questions with Oscar "Digger" Graybill Part 1
Q: Speaking of mentors, I want to start out with kind of thinking of that idea of mentorship. Could you talk about Hal Mitrovich and why he was such a standout mentor for you?
Hal Mitrovich stood out as a father-figure-like mentor who taught through authentic leadership, enthusiasm, intelligence, and compassion. His influence showed up in how I approached coaching, emphasizing living with purpose, building a structured routine for practice and matches, and caring for players as people first. He also instilled the idea that the way you treat people is more important than winning, and he modeled how to lead with integrity while pushing for excellence.
Strength and Conditioning for Young Volleyball Players with Emily Schilling from University of Illinois
Q: What are the most common injuries that you see in volleyball athletes and what is the prehab protocol for that?
Common injuries include weak ankles, patellar tendinitis, and low back pain. The prehab protocol involves strengthening movements and injury prevention exercises tailored to the athlete's needs.
The Volley Pod at The AVCA Convention Part 2 with USA Volleyball Director of Education Services Dr. Jenny Johnson
Q: If you could make one change, where is the lowest hanging fruit in coach's education?
My lowest-hanging fruit is making sure that we have tons of net space for practicing.
The Volley Pod @ The AVCA Convention 2025 with Samantha Erger, Leonard Armato, Tony Ker, and Jeff Grove
Q: How do you define training for different levels of setters?
I focus on cognitive training for beginners and then move to game-like drills for more advanced setters to ensure they can make decisions in real-time.
