  • Wonderful for Woolf fans!

I just recently discovered this podcast, and I have spent many happy mornings listening to the episodes as I made breakfast for my family. I’m so sad to have reached the most recent episode and hope a new one will be released soon!

The podcast brings me back to my college days 25 years ago when I first discovered Woolf as an English major. I was blown away by “Mrs. Dalloway” and proceeded to scour my college library for everything I could find by and about her. I read her novels, short stories,... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Night and Day on Film with Director, Tina Gharavi
Q: How did casting and location choices shape the film's interpretation of Woolf's world?
The casting of Hayley Bennett as Catherine Hilbury and filming in Newcastle and Beamish Museum created a vivid, contemporary-leaning interpretation of the period, enabling a modernist sensibility within a historically grounded setting.
Night and Day on Film with Director, Tina Gharavi
Q: What were the biggest changes you decided to make from the novel to the film, and why?
The film isn't a faithful word-for-word transfer; it preserves the essence and characters but lets the script lead the storytelling, allowing for radical cinematic choices that reveal the novel's density in a more accessible way.
Night and Day on Film with Director, Tina Gharavi
Q: Could you tell us a little bit about that, especially how you approached making Night and Day relevant for today?
We realigned the draft to find a clear spine around Catherine Hilbury's choices and ambitions, ensuring the story speaks to contemporary concerns while retaining Woolf's themes about gender, language, and power.
The Waves on Stage
Q: How did the casting and rehearsal process influence the final form of the play?
Casting six exceptional performers who could operate as an ensemble was crucial; the process demanded generosity and precise timing to pass the rhythm around the company. Rehearsals were fast and collaborative, with a lot of experimentation to let the text sing in performance and to determine how much staging could reveal rather than dictate the dialogue.
The Waves on Stage
Q: What motivated you to tackle The Waves now, and how did you approach making it stageable?
We felt the book's energy and the idea of translating a stream-of-consciousness chorus to a live, tangible experience was exciting and important. We approached it by focusing on the dinner scene as a pivot, shaping a rhythm that could sustain six voices while keeping the lyrical quality intact, and we embraced the intimacy of a small, audience-facing space to bring the characters to life.
