"How many vegans are there? And is that number growing? Now, tucked away in this seemingly simple question is a minefield of inconsistent, conflicting, and missing data. And I recently did my best to make sense of it."

  • No bueno

Episode 67 is a travesty, using animal rights activism as a pretext to letting three guests shill for Zionism, unchallenged. No one from the other side of the argument was invited to counter the outrageous claims made by your guests. Congratulations, you hosted a Zionist pity-party full of misinformation and genocide denial. Rating: one star. Will not be listening further.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Mecca of Animal Rights: Inside the AVA Summit | Ep. 118
Q: Is it still worth going to AVA Summit given potential risks like security concerns or travel costs?
Yes, despite risks, the value of in-person networking, learning, and community far outweighs concerns. Moving the event to Mexico lowers some costs, and organizers provide funding assistance and housing options, making attendance more accessible. The deep connections and collaborative opportunities make the summit a worthwhile investment for movement-building.
The Mecca of Animal Rights: Inside the AVA Summit | Ep. 118
Q: What was our goal going into this AVA Summit and what was our experience?
The core goal was fundraising and meeting donors, with the added aim of connecting funders to Buddhist-focused animal advocacy. The experience highlighted intense but valuable meetings, opportunities to present the work to funders, and the realization that funders are people with shared passions, not distant financiers. The event enabled direct dialogue, showcased the organization's niche, and demonstrated the potential for long-term support.
The Repugnant Conclusion of Effective Animal Altruism | Science of Activism
Q: How has the reception been among effective altruists to your paper, and what do you think could improve dialogue between communities?
The paper sparked constructive conversations but also polarized some EA readers due to the provocative title. Many discussions centered on whether animals in factory farms can ever have net positive welfare, and the debate highlighted differences in empirically grounded reasoning. Improving dialogue could involve presenting alternative frameworks openly, avoiding defensiveness, and highlighting concrete, positive collaborative paths that bring together welfarists and abolitionists around shared goals.
The Repugnant Conclusion of Effective Animal Altruism | Science of Activism
Q: What practical shift in goal do you propose for animal advocacy beyond maximizing welfare?
I propose focusing on reducing suffering as the primary objective rather than maximizing aggregate welfare. This broader goal opens a wider array of strategies, such as KH3-style campaigns to shut down or prevent factory farming, and can incorporate both welfare improvements and abolitionist aims without being tethered to a single utilitarian calculus.
The Repugnant Conclusion of Effective Animal Altruism | Science of Activism
Q: Could you summarize the Repugnant Conclusion as it applies to animal advocacy and why it matters for activists today?
The Repugnant Conclusion suggests that a very large population with each individual having only modest welfare could surpass a small, highly well-off population in terms of total welfare. This challenges the idea that maximizing net aggregate welfare should be the sole aim of animal advocacy, because it could justify expanding factory farming if the overall welfare balance remains positive. It matters today because it forces activists to scrutinize foundational goals and the ethical implications of tactics that prioritize quantity of welfare over quality.
