  • Honest yet Hopeful

Jasmin and Mariann look into some of the worst crimes of humanity, but manage to leave me at the end of every episode with a sense of hope. Very focused on what can be done and what can be changed about a wide range of social issues impacting human and non-human animals alike.

  • Ever inspiring!

I absolutely love Marianne and Jasmin. I’ve listened to Our Hen House since the beginning. They are the reason I switched from vegetarian to vegan and they are a (thrice weekly!) reminder of why I continue to choose veganism over a decade later. Thoughtful, intelligent, funny and grounded in the reality that things aren’t rosy right now- I appreciate their honestly and pragmatism while choosing to fight the good fight anyway.

  • I love the hen report!

I’ve listened to all episodes of our hen house (many of them twice!)

I love the new format of The Hen Report as the top of the show was always my favourite where we get to catch up with Jasmin and Mariann. I could listen to them chat about their lives and animals rights every day. So if you’d just make a daily 1 hour hen report that would be fab. Hehe.

The only thing is I’d keep it to just Jasmin and Mariann rather than an extra interview as listening to them chat is so entertaining and restful.... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Hen Report: The Hen Report: “Call Your Senators” | Cage-Free Eggs, Humane Washing & the Save Our Bacon Act
Q: What is the Save Our Bacon Act and how might it affect farm animal welfare and other industries?
The Act is part of the farm bill agenda aiming to roll back certain state regulations (like gestation crates and fur ads bans) and could undermine protections by preempting state standards and expanding subsidies for problematic practices; listeners are encouraged to contact their senators.
The Hen Report: The Hen Report: “Call Your Senators” | Cage-Free Eggs, Humane Washing & the Save Our Bacon Act
Q: You mentioned you've done cage-free campaigning in the past; how has that work evolved and what have you learned from it?
Campaigns have shown that public messaging must reconcile hopeful labeling with the harsh realities inside facilities, and activists should push for clearer, enforceable standards rather than relying on consumer perception alone.
Court Strikes Down Trump ESA Regulations — A Win for Endangered Species
Q: What are the practical implications of this ruling for future ESA regulations?
The ruling narrows how changes can limit the scope of analysis and enforcement under Section 7, requiring agencies to consider broader effects and provide clear, enforceable commitments. It also signals potential appellate scrutiny and ongoing debates around God Squad authority and future regulatory changes, meaning agencies may need to craft regulations that survive strict scrutiny and provide robust justification.
Court Strikes Down Trump ESA Regulations — A Win for Endangered Species
Q: What is a declarant and why is their role important in ESA litigation?
A declarant is a person who provides testimony or a declaration in the case to establish facts or interests that support standing, especially when the case concerns broad ecological impacts. In this episode, the declarant role helps demonstrate concrete injuries or stakes in species protection, which is crucial for organizational standing and for arguing against changes that could harm listed species.
Court Strikes Down Trump ESA Regulations — A Win for Endangered Species
Q: Can you summarize what Section 7 does and how these changes affect its enforcement?
Section 7 requires federal agencies to ensure their actions don't jeopardize listed species or adversely modify critical habitat, with a process of consultation and a biological opinion to guide decisions. The changes challenged in court sought to limit the scope of what needed to be considered (focusing on the footprint rather than broader effects) and to reduce enforceability of binding mitigation terms. The court found several changes arbitrary and capricious and inconsistent with the statute, preserving the core protective framework.
