  • Honest yet Hopeful

Jasmin and Mariann look into some of the worst crimes of humanity, but manage to leave me at the end of every episode with a sense of hope. Very focused on what can be done and what can be changed about a wide range of social issues impacting human and non-human animals alike.

  • Ever inspiring!

I absolutely love Marianne and Jasmin. I’ve listened to Our Hen House since the beginning. They are the reason I switched from vegetarian to vegan and they are a (thrice weekly!) reminder of why I continue to choose veganism over a decade later. Thoughtful, intelligent, funny and grounded in the reality that things aren’t rosy right now- I appreciate their honestly and pragmatism while choosing to fight the good fight anyway.

  • I love the hen report!

I’ve listened to all episodes of our hen house (many of them twice!)

I love the new format of The Hen Report as the top of the show was always my favourite where we get to catch up with Jasmin and Mariann. I could listen to them chat about their lives and animals rights every day. So if you’d just make a daily 1 hour hen report that would be fab. Hehe.

The only thing is I’d keep it to just Jasmin and Mariann rather than an extra interview as listening to them chat is so entertaining and restful.... more

  • Funny, blunt, inspiring, interesting …

Jasmin and Mariann are my friends, my inspiring campaigning advocates and truth tellers. They have funny, inspiring and funny chats with each other and some incredible guests. They focus almost exclusively on animal rights which is such a refreshing angle in the vegan podcast world. They share their and my highs and lows, funny stories, outrage and anger at the latest news. Anxiety is Rising a pertinent and blunt examination of current events. This is my favourite podcast. I love it, love it,... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

When the Law Fails Farmworkers: J-1 Visa Exploitation, Labor Trafficking, and the Hidden Cost of Cheap Meat
Q: Can you walk us through the core facts of the J-1 internship case and who the main parties were?
Three Guatemalan agronomy graduates came to the US on J-1 visas through a recruitment network (World Wide Farmers Exchange) linked to a pig farm (Livingston Enterprises). They were promised a formal training program, housing, a stipend, and cultural experiences, but instead performed unsafe, general labor with little training, incurred debt, faced retaliation, and were ultimately fired when they spoke up. The case centers on misusing the visa to exploit workers rather than provide genuine training.
The Truth About “Top” Zoos: Dr. Liz Tyson of Born Free USA on Animal Captivity, Happy the Elephant, and Why No Zoo Is Good for Animals
Q: How do sanctuaries differ from zoos, and why should listeners care about this distinction?
Sanctuaries prioritize the animals' lifelong welfare, avoid breeding, and generally do not function as public exhibits, offering a humane alternative to captivity, though they face funding and accessibility challenges that complicate public perception and support.
The Truth About “Top” Zoos: Dr. Liz Tyson of Born Free USA on Animal Captivity, Happy the Elephant, and Why No Zoo Is Good for Animals
Q: What is your take on the idea that zoos are essential for conservation and education?
Liz argues that conservation in the wild requires addressing root causes like habitat loss, climate change, and local engagement, and that zoos often rely on outdated justifications, with many species not being wild-threatened and thus not justifying captivity as conservation.
The Truth About “Top” Zoos: Dr. Liz Tyson of Born Free USA on Animal Captivity, Happy the Elephant, and Why No Zoo Is Good for Animals
Q: Can you tell us about Happy the Elephant and what her story reveals about life in captivity?
Happy's case shows that even long-term, well-known zoo residents can endure isolated, stressful lives that fail to meet basic social and environmental needs, prompting critical questions about the ethics and utility of captivity for highly intelligent, social animals like elephants.
The Hen Report: “Moments of Respair” | Beagle Rescue, Animal Activism & Do We Need Hope?
Q: What fuels Gretchen Primack to keep advocating despite ongoing despair?
Her three core pillars—relationships, activism, and seizing joy—provide a framework that keeps her engaged and hopeful in a practical sense, not merely emotionally.
