  • A great mix of intellectual weight and delight

I’m a mechanical engineering professor and this podcast makes me wish I studied philosophy, each episode is rich in its own way. I’m amazed at how much intellectualism is dropped in such short conversations! Dr. Cherry has a skill for asking thought-provoking questions that avoid redundancy and really draw upon the expertise of the guests. The ease of conversation and social relevance of the topics makes philosophy less intimidating and much more intriguing. I’m so thankful a friend sent me an e... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 74: Nicholas Buccola on Freedom, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Barry Goldwater
Q: What is the most compelling argument of the conservative view, and how does King respond to it?
The conservative view centers on limiting government and preserving individual liberty; King counterposes this with a vision of liberty that includes economic dignity and collective empowerment, arguing that law and government are necessary to protect citizens from oppression and to enable true freedom.
Episode 74: Nicholas Buccola on Freedom, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Barry Goldwater
Q: Who was Martin Luther King, Jr. and who was Barry Goldwater?
King is portrayed as a deep thinker whose theology informs his leadership in civil rights, while Goldwater is shown as a principled, albeit controversial, conservative figure driven by a skepticism of big government and a belief in individual responsibility.
Episode 77: Robin Dembroff on Patriarchy and Masculinity
Q: How would you define gender beyond traditional readings, and why is this distinction important for understanding patriarchy?
Gender should be seen as a relational, historical process—gendering—that shapes how bodies are interpreted and organized in social life, not a fixed attribute; this helps reveal how patriarchy sustains itself through cultural narratives.
Episode 77: Robin Dembroff on Patriarchy and Masculinity
Q: What first drew you to philosophy and how does it relate to your work on gender and patriarchy?
Philosophy was a toolbox for escaping psychological confinement and a way to understand and critique the social structures that naturalize cruelty and inequality, which is foundational to her work on gender and patriarchy.
Episode 76: Joel Krueger on AI and Loneliness
Q: What is loneliness philosophically, and why has it been overlooked by philosophers?
Loneliness is a felt absence of social goods, a painful experience that varies by individual and group, explaining its philosophical neglect and the need to understand it in relation to access and accessibility of social resources.
