  • One of the most thoughtful trail running podcasts out there.

The Steep Stuff Podcast goes way beyond the nuanced race results and gear talk. James is a true professional and there’s a clear sense of perfecting the craft over the last year. The conversations feel real, unforced, and human. It’s more like sitting in on a long run chat than listening to an interview. You’re listening and feel like you’re part of the conversation.

What sets it apart is the patience, the honesty of each guest, and James ability to drive the podcast forward. Guests are given s... more

  • Trail running is for the people

Professional and elite sports frequently feel so distant and difficult to grasp for the average person. James does a great job removing all the noise and gets into real, down-to-earth conversations with the sport’s best. It’s refreshing to listen to a podcast that puts genuineness above all else. Keep up the great work!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Mason Coppi - Post Sunapee Scramble (U.S. Mountain Running Championship) Interview - Post Race Live
Q: How did you manage the switch from longer races to a shorter, faster race for this event?
I felt both more confident and less so in different ways; changes in training—more speed work, threshold work, and controlled easy runs—helped. The key was adapting training while maintaining downhill and muscular endurance ability.
Dan Curts - Pre Sunapee Scramble (U.S. Mountain Running Championship) Interview
Q: You've had major surgery recently. How has that affected your training and confidence going into this season?
He describes the tumor removal, the recovery period, the difficulties with neck mobility and facial numbness, and how he gradually rebuilt training volume and strength, with cautious optimism about returning to racing.
Dan Curts - Pre Sunapee Scramble (U.S. Mountain Running Championship) Interview
Q: Let's talk about some of the race strategy for Sunapee. How do you expect to approach the course in terms of pacing and descents?
Dan explains that the descent isn't very long, so time gains may come from a measured effort on the uphill and the runnable second half, rather than trying to crush the early sections; he plans to race smart and push when it counts, while acknowledging the strength of other top contenders.
2026 USATF Mountain Running Championship - Sunapee Scramble Live Stream Audio
Q: What makes the race strategy on a two-loop course unique?
The first loop is fast and aggressive, while the second loop is more technical and longer, so racers must pace themselves, decide when to push on climbs, and manage downhill sections to avoid fatigue that could cost them on the tougher second loop.
Remi Leroux - Pre Sunapee Scramble (U.S. Mountain Running Championship) Interview
Q: What about strategy for the double-loop course? Do you plan to sit back or go out hard with the others?
He expects the race to start fast with some leaders going hard, and plans to stay in contact early while managing effort to avoid being dropped on the second lap, leveraging his improved technical ability.
