  • One of the most thoughtful trail running podcasts out there.

The Steep Stuff Podcast goes way beyond the nuanced race results and gear talk. James is a true professional and there’s a clear sense of perfecting the craft over the last year. The conversations feel real, unforced, and human. It’s more like sitting in on a long run chat than listening to an interview. You’re listening and feel like you’re part of the conversation.

What sets it apart is the patience, the honesty of each guest, and James ability to drive the podcast forward. Guests are given s... more

  • Trail running is for the people

Professional and elite sports frequently feel so distant and difficult to grasp for the average person. James does a great job removing all the noise and gets into real, down-to-earth conversations with the sport’s best. It’s refreshing to listen to a podcast that puts genuineness above all else. Keep up the great work!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#180 - Taylor Stack
Q: Walk me through the race start and how you positioned yourself among the leaders.
I settled into the top 10 early and used Daniel Pattis for pacing, staying controlled on the climbs as Remy Bonet surged ahead, which allowed me to manage effort and avoid early collapse while positioning for a late push.
#171 - Aimee Kohler, Founder & RD of The Running Kind
Q: Can you explain how your carbon offsets and carbon neutrality work for The Running Kind?
We started with Native Energy, then moved to the Change Climate Project, which requires a detailed reduction plan each year and provides a vetted directory of offset projects; we offset runners' emissions and work to reduce our own footprint through changes like using solar generators.
#171 - Aimee Kohler, Founder & RD of The Running Kind
Q: What is the date for Climate For Climate?
Climate For Climate is August 16th in the Catskills, a 25K course that blends gnarly terrain with scenic views.
Elise Coates - 2026 Trail Team Selection
Q: What inspired you to apply to the Trail Team and what unique value do you bring?
Elise emphasizes the desire to join a network of like-minded athletes for shared progress and notes her passion for community, sponsorship activations, and cross-disciplinary racing (track and trail) as a core motivation and value proposition.
Grant Colligan | Gorge Waterfalls 30K Pre Race Interview
Q: What do you think of the distance and nutrition planning for a two-hour race?
Two hours is the sweet spot; you need a steady, hard effort with enough nutrition to sustain you through the mid-race and avoid blowing up, while staying with the front group as long as possible.
