Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Books for Turbulent Times: Emily Henry, Motherland and When To Hibernate
Q: Do you have recommendations for other books that are written like that (documenting hard times and coping through narrative)?
Ella responds by describing a cadence of crime and true narrative formats that probe motive and truth, while Jake adds that the effectiveness lies in how the narrative invites readers to decide for themselves and connect with characters through layered perspectives.
Noughties Nostalgia: Lily Allen, Malorie Blackman and Kissin’ Kate Barlow
Q: Are there any good books you'd like to recommend for Stella?
They suggest Catherine Rundell's Impossible Creatures for younger readers and The Doom Spell for more adventurous reads, while sharing travel memories and audiobooks as a way to keep kids engaged on long journeys.
Noughties Nostalgia: Lily Allen, Malorie Blackman and Kissin’ Kate Barlow
Q: And what should I read next?
The hosts acknowledge Rex's strong taste in dystopian books and recommend a mix of age-appropriate titles like Charlie Higson's Enemy series and Jasper Fforde's The Last Dragonslayer, framing selections as stepping stones suitable for a reader moving from mid to upper middle grade.
Everybody Scream: Haunted Books, Ghost Stories and Book Binges
Q: Have you gone in a fictional or non-fiction direction?
I've gone in a fictional route, because what I would imagine as a therapist is you understand people and psychology so well that reading something where character motivations are quite simplistic and not explained probably won't do it for you.
Weird Little Books: Zombies, Word Soup and Falling In Love With A Printer
Q: Do you have any recommendations for audiobooks that are particularly good having had them read to you rather than reading them yourself?
Jake suggests 'Friends, Lovers and The Big Terrible Thing' by Matthew Perry, which he narrates, highlighting its vulnerability and honesty about addiction.
