A reliably good podcast; I have just listened to the prison ramen episode, which I can recommend.

  • The Best Interviews in the Business

I have been looking forward to listening to each week’s Sporkful for years. When I reflect on what makes this podcast so enjoyable for me, I keep coming back to Dan Pashman’s uncanny ability to give an amazing interview. Dan asks insightful and thoughtful questions. He interjects the perfect amount of his own experiences. He sounds like he loves a good and genuine laugh but certainly does not shy away from important and hard discussions. What a pro! Keep up the amazing conversations!

I have listened for 6 years, and am unfollowing now. In hosting Judy Gold, you are platforming a person who is pro-genocide and thinks her marginalized identity as an LGBTQ+ person is a permission slip to tear down other oppressed groups.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How Much Should You Tip At A Coffee Shop?
Q: What are your thoughts on tipping in counter-service settings like cafes and bakeries?
Tipping on quick, 45-second transactions feels excessive to some guests given wages and the time involved; the guests acknowledge the labor but argue for wage-based solutions or policy changes to fix the system.
Reheat: What's "Poor People's Food"?
Q: How do marketing and publishing decisions affect how a cookbook representing a culture is received?
Marketing tends to simplify and package cultural topics in a way that makes them more palatable to a broad audience, which can both help reach readers but also risk stereotyping or boxing in authors who are culturally nuanced.
Why Would Someone Run 31 Miles While Eating Taco Bell?
Q: How did Eleanor prepare for the Taco Bell 50K?
She used a method called gastric training, adjusting meal timing and carb intake, and experimented with menu items to prepare her stomach for the race while maintaining energy.
Hasan Minhaj Says Life Is Like Biryani (Reheat)
Q: Did you grow up eating with your hands?
Yes, he did and describes the practice, including adaptations like making naan into wraps or burritos for school lunches, and later accepting the cultural expression as part of his identity.
Hasan Minhaj Says Life Is Like Biryani (Reheat)
Q: This is one of the first things that I was unsure about coming to speak with you, was which way to pronounce your name?
Hasan explains that pronunciation depends on where you live, and that he aims to honor the original pronunciation from his communities while also making it accessible in broader American contexts.
