EP52. Moral Injury in Sonography - Featuring Kevin Evans
Q: What steps can individuals and organizations take to address and prevent moral injury?
Key steps include forgiveness (self and workplace), implementing policy changes, fostering supportive work environments, reducing unnecessary ergonomic strain, and integrating mental health and wellness practices into daily operations.
EP52. Moral Injury in Sonography - Featuring Kevin Evans
Q: What are some concrete examples of events that contributed to moral injury in ultrasound practice?
Examples include restrictive PPE use and limited time with critically ill ICU patients, restrictions on who could be present with obstetric patients during delivery, and the emotional toll of fetal demise on the sonographer, all of which prevented providers from delivering the care they believed was right.
EP52. Moral Injury in Sonography - Featuring Kevin Evans
Q: Could you begin by defining moral injury and explain where the term comes from?
Moral injury arises when clinicians know the ethically correct action but external constraints prevent them from delivering that care; it was described in the context of clinicians facing tough choices during the pandemic and is linked to PTSD-like symptoms.
