He Left Startups to Buy a $300K/Year Business ($50K Down)
Q: What were the key terms of the deal and how did you structure it without SBA financing at first?
He closed the deal for 179K with 50K down and a seller financing arrangement over two years, achieving a multiple around 1.3-1.5x. The seller preferred a personal connection and agreed to a staged transition with the previous owner staying involved during the handoff.
This Man Makes $3M/Year With Direct Mail (his $5M/year plan)
Q: What's the long-term vision for growth?
Double and triple down on direct mail as part of multi-channel strategies, add analytics dashboards for clients, potentially open another facility in a more central location, and push to exceed 5 million EBITDA within the next year.
This Man Makes $3M/Year With Direct Mail (his $5M/year plan)
Q: What were the biggest challenges in transitioning to ownership?
The manufacturing environment was new to me, cash-flow swings were intense, and I had to quickly implement better systems, bring in fractional CFOs, and rework the organizational culture to scale beyond heroics.
This Man Makes $3M/Year With Direct Mail (his $5M/year plan)
Q: How did you structure the financing and close the deal?
We maxed out SBA financing, included a seller note for five years, and brought in personal capital plus some friends and family to bridge working-capital gaps during close; AR from the prior company helped smooth the initial months.
This Man Makes $3M/Year With Direct Mail (his $5M/year plan)
Q: Tell us about the size and dynamics of the business when you bought it.
It was 1.7 million EBITDA; we planned for growth beyond politics, diversified the client base, and built the organization to handle large and small runs, with a focus on efficiency and scalable systems.
