Emilio, Madeline, and Julian love music, and spend their afternoons and evenings working for and teaching at a music school in midtown Manhattan. But they also really love movies. A lot. So when they're done teaching, they stay up late and discuss a movie, sometimes a few, that they've all agreed to see recently. Opinions, musings, personal stories, and sincere film enthusiasm ensue.

  • You had me at “Musician Cinephiles”

Whenever I hear their opening “I’m Emilio, I’m Madeline, and I’m Julian,” I know it’s time to settle in for a fun and knowledgeable discussion about a film that I may or may not have seen. Either way, it’s sure to be a smart and entertaining way to spend an evening. It’s obvious that the three of them truly enjoy films, and their friendly banter is a joy that I’ve grown addicted to. Keep ‘em coming, guys.

  • AWESOME…Magnetic, fun and enlightening discussion

I have had my hair blown back listening to these 3 brainiac musicians conspire in discussion about movies. With varying thoughtful interpretations of each movie, their conversation has left me changed and excited about movies in a way I haven’t experienced. I don’t even have to have SEEN the movie to feel like I gained perspective. As a bonus, I also feel like I spent my time with some great humans. Sleepless Cinematic is a great listen.

  • Great show about great shows!

Emilio, Madeline, and Joshua clearly love movies and listening to them have fun while analyzing films is like hanging with old friends. Their selection of films range from popcorn blockbusters to artistic lodestars, and their reactions are educated by a clear deep-research of the history of cinema. It’s also wonderful to hear disagreements between their own respective tastes, discussed without judgement of one another on their likes/dislikes. Lastly, it’s fun hearing trained musicians give their... more

  • A hearty cozy cinematic pajama party

Definitely the sort of easy going, tasteful film forum/discussion that is exuding an earnest enthusiasm. A great watch along podcast and one that I can listen to while playing the Movie Studio Tycoon or Stardew Valley. All 3 hosts are charming. I am curious about musicians who are also cinephiles. If you need something to pick up your commute, close out the graveyard shift, or anyone who likes well researched, highly measured movie chat you gotta give this show a try. Will be the next big name i... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Seventy Years of 'Written On The Wind' (1956) with Christian Garcia
Q: What made you start your own podcast, Christian?
Christian explains that his podcast is an homage to classic films he loved growing up and a platform to discuss the golden age of cinema through a queer lens, offering a bridge between fans and scholarly perspectives.
A Neil Simon Rom-Com Trio, with James Codoyannis: 'Barefoot in the Park' (1967), 'The Heartbreak Kid' (1972), and 'The Goodbye Girl' (1977)
Q: What stands out most about Barefoot in the Park as a transition piece between stage and film?
The group notes that the film captures theatrical roots through its apartment setting and character dynamics, but Mike Nichols's naturalistic direction and dynamic blocking inject a living, kinetic energy that translates stage dialogue into cinema, making it feel intimate and lived-in rather than a straight stage copy.
A Human Interest Story: 'Broadcast News' (1987) with David Schwartz
Q: So, Madeline, can you tell us what Broadcast News is about?
Broadcast News revolves around a love triangle between Jane, a passionate TV news producer, Aaron, her best friend and a dedicated reporter, and Tom, a charming new anchor who represents everything Jane stands against in journalism, leading to tensions and romantic complications within their high-stakes work environment.
Gnomes, Pay Phones and Deux Moulins: 'Amelie' (2001) with Anu Valia
Q: Anu, how did you first come to this movie?
Anu shared that she doesn't remember when she first saw this movie, but she loved it when she did and revisiting it later, she found herself relating deeply to the protagonist's sense of loneliness.
'Wicked for Good' (2025) Reactions with Down The Yellow Brick Pod and Courtney Iventosch
Q: What did you think of the liberties that this film takes in relation to the second act of the stage show?
The new choices were interesting, but didn't leave me wowed like the first one did. There were some great story developments that added context.
