  • An opinionated look at genre from two fans

The Skiffy and Fanty show is an opinionated look at genre from two fans, Jen Zink and Shaun Duke. Their bread and butter are interviews with genre figures as well as their well-developed banter between them. The hosts are long time friends and have a distinct ease and comfort as they go back and forth on everything from Pixar films to women. There is a distinct political edge and viewpoint to their work which they normally leave for their political podcast, but sometimes leaks into this one as... more

  • Meets your fantcy

S&F is a really fun show all about the world of science fiction. I really appreciate that they take the time to actually talk to the creators of the works they're discussing. This gives it a unique touch that's hard to emulate on other scifi podcasts.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

863. Aerospace Engineering w/ Eric Choi — SF At School
Q: Why should we continue exploring space now, given earthly needs?
Exploration drives both indirect and direct benefits, including new technologies and capabilities that help address earthly problems, such as satellite-based climate monitoring and advanced imaging techniques that can improve medical diagnostics.
860. John Chu (a.k.a. The Dimensional Chef) — The Subtle Art of Folding Space
Q: Could you tell listeners what The Subtle Art of Folding Space is about?
The story follows Ellie, a maintainer who helps keep a vast universe-machine running while navigating personal loss, family tensions, and a mystery that links science, fate, and friendship; it blends hard science concepts with absurd, humorous moments, especially around food.
855. Oliver Brackenbury + Molly Tanzer (NESS) — Signal Boost
Q: What parallels or differences do you see between Sword & Sorcery and space opera or planetary romance?
The guests agree that SNS and space opera share a sense of wonder and dynamic pacing, but SNS remains grounded in body-centric, often low-to-mid scale stakes, while space opera broadens to planetary scales; both can be fast and character-driven, with SNS offering a more immediate, visceral experience.
855. Oliver Brackenbury + Molly Tanzer (NESS) — Signal Boost
Q: One is, how would you define sword and sorcery?
Oliver defines it as often featuring outsider protagonists with personal motivations, grounded, bodily-focused action, and a tendency toward shorter forms with a mix of horror elements, setting itself apart from epic/high fantasy and grimdark by prioritizing a kinetic, human-scale experience.
848. Martha Wells (a.k.a. The Raksura Amanuensis) — Queen Demon
Q: What was it like to transition from writing science fiction back to fantasy?
It's kind of a relief in a lot of ways because I've always loved fantasy, and returning to it felt like a vacation.
