  • French pronunciation disaster!

The podcaster seems to be completely unfamiliar with the French language or even French pronunciation rules so that, to anyone familiar with them and, in particular, the names of the people mentioned, each wildly inaccurate attempt at pronunciation causes pain which makes it impossible to listen for long. It seems odd to have started on this mammoth task without some knowledge of the language or the relevant pronunciation. I notice from the website that his sources are exclusively English or tra... more

  • A great podcast for history nerds

I love this podcast. It’s incredibly informative and it a great to get some real depth to an historical topic that would probably be out of reach for most people who are not proficient in French.

I liked it so much when I discovered it last October that during work (which was manual in nature so provides time to listen to podcasts) I caught up on the whole lot in 2 weeks.

And it is for this reason why it gets 4/5 and not the return it really deserves… it needs to be more frequent. Probably a... more

  • Absolutely the top class of history podcasts- with transcripts

The Siècle is, of all the many narrative history podcasts I’ve encountered, absolutely the best of them. It’s immensely detailed and thorough, incredibly well-researched, and really compelling.

One really helpful thing too is that every episode has a transcript on the podcast website. This is really helpful for spelling- I’m not a French expert and it can be hard to work out a name just from hearing it said- but also has pictures and most importantly a billion citations so you can see just how... more

  • David is a fantastic host. It starts out a little rough as he gets his footing, but around episode 6 or so it really gets going. If you love Revolutions or The Age of Napoleon, this is for you!

  • This Podcast Unties Knots

in an effort to understand this era of French history I have read a lot of books and even taken a college course, but I have never found a resource that so clearly and entertainingly laid it out as this podcast. Bravo!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 37: Algiers
Q: How independent was Ottoman Algeria compared to other parts of the empire?
The sultan did not have as much control over Algeria as he did in other regions, leading to a semi-autonomous status that often frustrated the sultan.
Episode 37: Algiers
Q: What was Algeria at this time, who was in control, and what was life like there?
In 1830, Algeria was part of the Ottoman Empire. It was its westernmost province, and it was quite cosmopolitan with a mix of Europeans, Sub-Saharan Africans, Berbers, and Arabs.
Episode 37: Algiers
Q: Can you introduce yourself to the audience about you and your research interests, how you got interested in Algeria?
Sure. I am a comparative colonial historian by training, but I also picked up an interest in digital humanities along the way.
