Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Starting a new "Golden" Era - Head Coach of the Cal Golden Bears - Tosh Lupoi
Q: Coach, how important was it to you having that good quarterback already there for you in JKS?
While there were marquee quarterbacks in the mix, the core idea was to retain a player like Jared Goff, continue to grow the program, and leverage Cal's culture to attract top talent while managing the portal strategically.
Rebuilding Raider Nation - guest GM John Spytek
Q: What's your piece of advice for scouts who want to sit in the GM chair someday?
be prepared to hear no a lot and keep pushing; write to many opportunities, stay hungry, and be ready to move and work long hours for little pay initially, while preserving the long-term focus on growth and opportunity and following your true north to make decisive, fearless choices when the moment is right.
Rebuilding Raider Nation - guest GM John Spytek
Q: What are the biggest lessons you've taken from mentors like Howie Roseman and Jason Light that you're trying to apply now in Vegas?
surround yourself with high-quality people, empower them, and resist micromanaging while maintaining accountability; cultivate curiosity and be willing to try new approaches, but always evaluate and adapt based on what best serves the organization and its people.
Rebuilding Raider Nation - guest GM John Spytek
Q: John, before we dig into even further into your Scouting career, I want to go back to Ann Arbor just very briefly. Those of us of a certain age remember when Tom Brady was there, was kind of sharing a job with a guy named Drew Hanson, who was your classic traits tools guy. Do you think Tom Brady gets recognized more if Hanson hadn't been there?
The situation highlighted how much timing and opportunity shape a player's early perception, but Brady's talent and drive were undeniable; I think his career would have progressed with or without that specific competition, though it's interesting to consider how small shifts can affect a quarterback's perceived trajectory.
Been There, 33rd Team and more with Mike Tannenbaum
Q: If you were starting out today, would you work in college football or pro football, and which is more fertile for young people?
Take the best opportunity available, whether it's college or pro. Early exposure in any capacity—foot in the door, learn the culture, build relationships, and be willing to work hard in whatever setting you land.
