  • Redownloaded Apple Pods so I could write this…it’s that good

Getting serious about baby making and planning over the past six months I decided to find a great podcast about motherhood. 90% of what I found was absolute drivel until I found the women speaking my language. The Science of Motherhood provides conversations that are wonderfully informative, fun to listen to and really thought provoking. If you’re someone who is preparing for parenthood, in the depths of it, watching your babies grow, or wanting to support their partner and learn about the unbia... more

  • Not my fave podcast about pregnancy and motherhood

I was looking for a podcast about birth and pregnancy by a doctor to prepare myself for motherhood and came across this one. I got a bit misled when they called themselves doctors, but were really researchers. Don’t get me wrong, I am also researcher with a PhD in neurooncology, so I get it, except I wouldn’t be spreading my title around as if I was a source of medical information when I’m not (kind of like false advertising?). I tried to listen to a few eps but was not terribly impressed by the... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 223. How OTs are helping Neurodivergent Mothers Navigate the System
Q: What does a typical session look like for you and how long does it last?
Sessions typically start with understanding the person's lived experience, daily routines, and support needs, then center on occupation—their meaningful activities and the barriers to engaging in them. An hour is common to allow time for rapport-building, exploring home and environment, and tailoring a plan that fits the person's life, with flexibility for home visits or clinic visits as needed.
Ep 219. Why Does Breastfeeding Protect Against Breast Cancer?
Q: How do these findings translate to potential treatments or prevention for women who haven't breastfed?
Understanding the T-cell targets and involution environment could inform vaccination strategies and interventions that mimic breastfeeding-induced immune changes, potentially benefiting women who haven't breastfed.
Ep 219. Why Does Breastfeeding Protect Against Breast Cancer?
Q: How long does breastfeeding need to be to have a meaningful protective effect, and why?
While epidemiological guidelines suggest six to twelve months, the biology is complex; longer breastfeeding likely strengthens the remodeling and immune training of the breast, but even partial breastfeeding is better than none due to gradual immune reprogramming.
Ep 219. Why Does Breastfeeding Protect Against Breast Cancer?
Q: What made you look at the immune system as the mechanism behind the protective effect of pregnancy and breastfeeding?
The observation came from looking at immune cells in both triple-negative breast cancer and normal breast tissue, which led to the idea that T cells might be reprogrammed during pregnancy and lactation to provide long-lasting local protection in the breast.
Ep 215. Contraception After Birth: IUDs, Pills, Implants Explained
Q: What are some of the questions that you think that they should be asking their GP?
They should ask about all contraceptive options and ensure that their GP discusses alternatives beyond just the pill.
