  • A postpartum lifeline

I found this podcast in the depths of first-time motherhood, when an unexpected job opportunity landed in my lap and I was trying to figure out who I was in this completely new chapter of life.

The appreciation I have for it is unmatched. It hauled me out of a lonely little world of trying to balance postpartum life, a new baby and the return to work, and replaced it with a big, warm, community-minded hug.

Loz and Lu give voice to the realities of everyday mothering - a group that can often fe... more

Bree Johnson on the myth of work-life balance
Q: What was it like returning to work as a founder after maternity leave, and how did you deal with imposter syndrome?
There was anxiety about not knowing all the details, but stepping back, building routines, asking for help, and gradually regaining confidence helped transition back into leadership.
Bree Johnson on the myth of work-life balance
Q: Before we get to your motherhood and career journey, what do you do on days when you're not feeling your most optimistic?
Focus on what you can control, use small daily rituals to bring joy, and lean into gratitude to reset the mood and momentum.
Am I the problem at work?
Q: How can partners share the caregiving load more fairly once back at work, and what practical tips help prevent resentment from building?
Have regular check-ins about tasks and responsibilities, walk side by side during conversations rather than facing each other, and explicitly name the invisible loads. Define fairness as opposed to equality, recognizing that schedules differ and flexibility may be required. Create a weekly planning ritual and consider tools like shared calendars or games (e.g., Fair Play cards) to make discussions constructive rather than punitive.
Am I the problem at work?
Q: What should someone do when returning from maternity leave is met with hostility, and how can they handle an environment that feels like it's gunning for them?
Lead with empathy to assess whether the hostility stems from overwhelm or genuine intent, then address specific behaviors rather than attacking the person. Offer reassurance that you're there to support them, document handover notes, and request a clear plan for collaboration. If tension persists, keep communication open but explore options to transition to a different role or team within the organization.
Am I the problem at work?
Q: What should you do about moody or micromanaging managers, and how can you share the mental load more evenly?
Start with a candid, non-confrontational check-in, ideally outside the office, to understand what the other person is going through. Acknowledge their role and share your own needs, including a request for a more permanent place or clarity on responsibilities. If the dynamic remains untenable, consider external options such as temporary adjustments or seeking a new role, but always aim to keep the dialogue open and constructive.
