  • A postpartum lifeline

I found this podcast in the depths of first-time motherhood, when an unexpected job opportunity landed in my lap and I was trying to figure out who I was in this completely new chapter of life.

The appreciation I have for it is unmatched. It hauled me out of a lonely little world of trying to balance postpartum life, a new baby and the return to work, and replaced it with a big, warm, community-minded hug.

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How do I work when I’m sleep deprived?
Q: Question three is anonymous. Returning to work with an eight-month-old and severe sleep deprivation, how can I perform well and avoid errors?
Be honest about fatigue, set a tone at the start of conversations, use tools like automatic transcription to capture details, and consider having a colleague review work to provide a quick feedback loop without relying on AI as a fact-checker for critical legal advice.
How do I work when I’m sleep deprived?
Q: Question two, Kira. My husband travels for work and often fails to put anything in the shared calendar. How do I manage and communicate without it derailing my week?
They advise having a dedicated Sunday planning session, expressing how the lack of calendar visibility affects you, and using a shared scheduling system to reduce friction; the goal is collaborative problem-solving rather than blaming.
How do I work when I’m sleep deprived?
Q: Question one from Nat. Am I holding my children back by not doing after school activities?
The hosts acknowledge the pressure many families feel but emphasize that being present, supportive, and flexible matters more than pushing kids into every activity; they suggest prioritizing a couple of meaningful activities and following the child's interests over societal pressures.
Is it ok to be one and done?
Q: Question three about working full-time out of necessity and the economy, and whether part-time is feasible for survival.
They acknowledge economic pressure and the reality that many families need higher incomes. The hosts caution against judging others' choices, remind listeners to consider long-term career implications, and advocate evaluating personal finances, potential work-hour adjustments, and staying emotionally connected to one's values while navigating the job market.
Is it ok to be one and done?
Q: What about the second question regarding returning to work after maternity leave while not wanting to lose a job you love?
The hosts discuss staying connected with your manager, exploring flexible arrangements if needed, and planning a gradual ramp-back to work. They acknowledge anxiety about job security but encourage practical steps like keeping visibility, negotiating a phased return, and ensuring you don't resent the arrangement later.
