  • All Court Staff & Survivors of DV

Anybody who works for family courts or cases involving children and abused women need to listen to these episodes. Unless court members are highly well trained in domestic violence they have NO business being a part of family court that involves domestic violence cases.

If I need back surgery, I’m not going to my dentist or general doctor. You need highly Specifically trained professionals to deal with these very ambiguous Abuse cases. Someone with terroristic training would be better suited ... more

  • Incredible Resource!!!

A therapist who really gets it! This podcast has been deeply meaningful to me over the last several years and every single episode is value packed and well informed. I wish this had been around years ago during times I couldn’t afford therapy and desperately needed help coparenting with my abuser and protecting my child from the harm of coercive control. Thank you so much, Sybil!!!!

  • Very insightful podcast

I live in France and a lot of the information on this podcast helps me. I started my healing journey with Lundy Bancroft’s why does he do that?, and Sybil touches on topics which are not all about the extremes of narcissism. Because abuse does not come only from narcissistic abuse but also from extreme entitlement and control. Thank you Sybil

  • Save yourself tons on lawyers fees with this amazing content.

Instead of spending tons of money asking your lawyer questions that are better answered by a therapist, listen to Sybil’s amazing content. She clearly knows her stuff and is doing a fabulous service for her community. What she is offering here is pure gold.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 204: Why Context Matters in Abuse Cases and How an Expert Witness Can Help with Carol Ann Peterson, PhD
Q: What should someone look for when selecting an expert witness for their case?
She recommends reviewing a CV, certifications, ongoing education, and a track record across different courts, ensuring the expert has specialized experience with the population and issues involved, not just academic credentials.
Ep 204: Why Context Matters in Abuse Cases and How an Expert Witness Can Help with Carol Ann Peterson, PhD
Q: What was that process like and why is this so important to you?
Carol Ann explains her path from being a lobbyist to an expert witness, driven by personal experience and a commitment to helping survivors. She emphasizes the importance of credible, sanctioned experts who understand the systems and can communicate complex context effectively to judges and juries.
Bonus Coaching: Afraid CPS Will Believe Your Ex? What Protective Parents Need to Know
Q: What should a protective parent look for to determine if a caseworker understands coercive control and domestic violence?
Focus on how the caseworker responds to patterns, whether they stay child-focused, and whether they interrupt or shame the parent. Ask about familiarity with coercive control strategically, but prioritize observing patterns and introducing observable evidence rather than labeling the other parent with terms like narcissist.
Ep 199: Changing the System From the Inside: A Law Enforcement Perspective on Domestic Violence with Captain Eric Threlkeld
Q: From a law-enforcement perspective, what changes are needed to shift from incident-based investigations to pattern-based, coercive-control-focused work?
You need robust, teeth-bearing policies that require identifying coercive control, extended time on DV investigations, thorough victim and witness interviews, careful documentation, and follow-up actions like protective orders enforcement and lethality assessments. It's about changing culture from the top down so that every officer understands the broader dynamics and prioritizes survivor safety and long-term accountability.
Ep 199: Changing the System From the Inside: A Law Enforcement Perspective on Domestic Violence with Captain Eric Threlkeld
Q: What motivated you to focus on supporting victims and survivors of domestic violence, and how did your career path lead you to this work?
I built a career across multiple agencies, working in child abuse units, divert programs, and later leadership roles where I could push for a team approach. The key was recognizing that DV work requires collaboration with advocates, prosecutors, and medical professionals, and that long-term training and policy changes beat piecemeal responses. The aim is to create structures that sustain effective responses beyond grants and short-term projects.
