  • The audio production needs work

Good guests and questions but I’ve stopped listening to several interviews because of how poorly produced some of the episodes are. A bit too distracting

  • Engaging and vital listening

The Rebooting is vital listening for anyone wanting to learn more or simply keep up with what’s happening with all the new news brands popping up. No show goes as deep on the business models of these new brands that make big debuts.

Brian is a good interviewer and knows the ins and outs of the world of media startups to ask the right questions. And he always gets into the money, something journalists and media folks appreciate.

  • Add this Show to your Favorites!

A fantastic listening experience and a perfect complement to Brian’s newsletter and earlier work at Digiday. This is an essential podcast for operators in media. Brian’s ability to book great guests, ask valuable questions, share valuable insights, and keep the conversation moving makes for time well spent. I consistently walk away with a better understanding of macro-level issues in media but, more importantly, micro-level ideas for my own business.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Puck model comes to food
Q: How does this model differ from The Athletic and Puck?
Caper integrates a stricter professional audience with equity and IP participation for contributors, plus a structured events strategy, while maintaining a strong consumer appeal; the approach is more niche, higher-end, and partnership-driven to scale efficiently.
The Puck model comes to food
Q: What is your theory of the case in media with this new venture?
The goal is to bring a strong, professional focus on the hospitality and food space by leveraging talent from successful publications, anchoring coverage in business and real estate stories, and building a diversified revenue model that includes subscriptions, advertising, and live events.
Journalism's product problem
Q: Can you explain what user needs are and why they matter for journalism product design?
User needs are standardized audience objectives (educate me, update me, perspective, inspire me, etc.) that guide what a story should do for a reader, not just what it should say. Designing around these needs helps determine the appropriate format, distribution, and data foundations, enabling more targeted and valuable journalism.
Food Fix's Helena Bottemiller Evich on optionality
Q: What gave you confidence on the business side?
She spoke with former colleagues and business people to understand the business model better, which helped her realize that she could also succeed in entrepreneurship.
Food Fix's Helena Bottemiller Evich on optionality
Q: What led you to leave Politico to think there's a lane to do this as a solo enterprise?
Helena felt that there was a gap in the market for in-depth food policy coverage which was overlooked by traditional media outlets, leading to her decision to launch Food Fix.
