262 - How To Build a $100M Bedding Brand | BEDGEAR Founder, Eugene Alletto
Q: What was the turning point that convinced you this product would work at scale?
The turning point was proving product value to both consumers and sales teams; by creating a mattress protector with clear benefits and training retailers to sell it effectively, the business established a sustainable, win-win model that generated strong initial traction and proof of concept.
255 - "I Raised $98M To Build a BIG Fighting Business" | Khalil Zahar, CEO of FightCamp
Q: How did you manage the four-year downturn post-COVID, and what did you learn about investors and cash flow during that period?
They leaned on supportive investors, stayed honest and well-prepared for board meetings, and focused on getting the business back to health and growth by managing CAC and marketing spend while rebuilding revenue.
255 - "I Raised $98M To Build a BIG Fighting Business" | Khalil Zahar, CEO of FightCamp
Q: When did you realize you needed to pivot to a broader platform beyond boxing, and how did that come about?
After initial traction and recognition from the boxing community, they were accepted into Y Combinator, which catalyzed the pivot to a more expansive platform that combines hardware with a learning/training ecosystem.
255 - "I Raised $98M To Build a BIG Fighting Business" | Khalil Zahar, CEO of FightCamp
Q: What was the start of the business like? Day one details, and how close was it to being a garage startup?
They began as a small, lab-based effort, collaborating with a friend who could handle electronics while Khalil managed the mechanical side; they treated it as a real startup from the outset, not just a side project.
255 - "I Raised $98M To Build a BIG Fighting Business" | Khalil Zahar, CEO of FightCamp
Q: So Khalil, you start in 2014, and the concept at the beginning of FightCamp, which was called something else, I think was like hardware so that professional fighters, boxers could train. What was the original idea behind FightCamp?
The idea came from Khalil's own needs and recognition that data-driven feedback for boxing training didn't exist; he and a co-founder with complementary skill sets built a hardware-based solution to measure punches and coach athletes, starting as a lab project in Montreal.
