Five star! This is a fantastic podcast and one I wish I had discovered months ago. I am currently recovering from radical prostatectomy and suffer from bladder neck contracture and urinary retention. I would appreciate your attention to this very difficult condition.

Thank you for your effort. I have learned a great deal and found great comfort in your work.

  • Wow just wow

The one from Dr. Adam cole is a so flawed. The way they process their tissue is so bad and not a good patient care. Putting all the cores on one slide to save money is not a good patient care at all. These cores never cut on same level and there are so many gaps from core to core with missing tissue!!! I have seen too many of these cases in my fellowship, none of my attending liked them!!

  • Outstanding podcast from the perspective of surgeons

Thanks, doc! This podcast is a terrific resource. I appreciate Dr. Pohlmann’s efforts too mediate between surgeons, many of whom work at research or teaching hospitals, and laypersons, primarily patients. I think his work here is potentially a boon for an unseen number of patients and colleagues. The only thing a little similar was Dr. Aaron Spitz’s publications, but Dr. Pohlmann’s show homes in on different angle or focus: the prostate. I have found personally that prostate syndromes are very ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

113: Beyond Traditional Prostate Surgery: Why HoLEP is Gaining Momentum – Austen Slade, MD
Q: What should patients consider when choosing a HOLUP surgeon?
Patients should consider the surgeon's case volume and experience, the team's ability to manage the learning curve, and access to advanced instrumentation. High-volume surgeons tend to have smoother early outcomes, shorter operative times, and lower complication risks. Availability of training resources and mentorship can also help ensure quality outcomes.
113: Beyond Traditional Prostate Surgery: Why HoLEP is Gaining Momentum – Austen Slade, MD
Q: What is HOLUP and how is it different from traditional surgical treatments for BPH?
HOLUP is an en bloc removal of the prostatic tissue surrounding the urethra, achieved through the urethra without large incisions, which contrasts with TURP's tissue shaving and simple prostatectomy's abdominal approach. By removing all pulp, HOLUP offers durable relief with a shorter recovery and lower risk of residual tissue regrowth, leading to long-term symptom improvement.
112: BioProtect Balloon Spacer: Reducing Side Effects in Modern Prostate Cancer Radiation Therapy - Jeffrey P. Wolters, MD and Coyt Rountree, MD
Q: Who are good clinical candidates for the BioProtect balloon spacer and are there situations where it might not be suitable?
Good candidates include patients undergoing IMRT or SBRT who want to reduce bowel-related side effects and preserve quality of life, particularly when anatomy places the rectum close to the prostate; while generally suitable for most patients, there are exceptions based on individual anatomy and prior surgeries where the team weighs risks before proceeding.
112: BioProtect Balloon Spacer: Reducing Side Effects in Modern Prostate Cancer Radiation Therapy - Jeffrey P. Wolters, MD and Coyt Rountree, MD
Q: What should men and their families know before starting radiation?
Radiation for prostate cancer is highly effective and modern techniques are precise, aiming to treat the prostate while minimizing dose to the bladder and rectum; patients should understand that spacer technology can reduce rectal dose and potentially lower bowel toxicity while preserving cancer control.
110: Evaluating Aquablation Therapy to Treat Prostate Cancer – WATER IV Prostate Cancer Trial – Inderbir S. Gill, MD
Q: Which patients with prostate cancer might qualify for the study?
Patients with organ-confined, low and intermediate risk prostate cancer who have already chosen radical prostatectomy as their treatment path.
