  • Mostly good; a little not so much (revised title after second thoughts)

This podcast often provides connections and insights that will make the reading of Tolkien’s works more enjoyable and engender greater insights. If only the two hosts were not so completely convinced of the hilarity and applicability of their endless digressions and juvenile pop culture references. It takes a few episodes but acquiring the skill of tuning these out is definitely worth the trouble.

  • Took my appreciation and understanding of Tolkien to an entire other level

I read The Hobbit in jr high and The Lord of the Ring in High School. I tried to read the Silmarillion but couldn’t get into it-confused me, couldn’t keep everyone straight. Now at 60 decided to make another attempt and someone on a LOTR fan page recommended the Prancing Pony Podcast. I got my recommended book to be able to mark up and followed Alan & Shawn through The Silmarillion- I loved it! So many beautiful passages and much more. I am heading to New Zealand soon and will download episode... more

  • An amazing way to learn about the world of Lotr

My aunt actually showed me this podcast after pestering her with questions such as “Do you think they knew about germ theory”. I love it even though the impromptu linguistic lessons make me have flashbacks to my Anthropology of linguistics class.

  • A great way to explore the world of Tolkien

Some of the works regarding middle earth are difficult to understand without context from other works and they do an excellent job of tying in important and helpful information while keeping it light and fun. I really enjoy listening to their takes.
