There's a moment in chapter 3 where Frodo overhears a conversation between the Gaffer and a mysterious individual. A serendipitous moment that changes Frodo's plans for leaving Bag End, and possibly saves the mission before it even begins.

What was it like when you left home for the first time? Frodo's experience is much more dangerous than most of ours, but Tolkien himself seems to share some things in common.

Chapter 2 comes to an end. It feels like the darkest chapter yet (in comparison to the Hobbit and chapter 1) but ends on an unexpected high note. Something that feels designed by Illuvatar himself.

Long time listener, first time caller. I have been listening to this show since day 1 and will at certain points just start again and catch up to where you are up to. I am lucky enough to live in Middle Earth (New Zealand) and as a sales rep who travels the South Island I can sometimes feel like I am in the landscape of what you are discussing. Been a Tolkien fan since late 90s and yearly re-read The Silmarilion, the Hobbit, LOTR, The Children of Hurin (personal fav). Keep up the great work.
I found you last week, (only a couple years late) but my buddy and I started playing return to Moria again, and needed more lotr lore! I found you. I own the original box set of the hobbit through the return of the king, but my gods are they mind numbing at points! I’ve listened to the entire story except the Silmarillion. I’m not much of a reader, haven’t been since high school. But you hit EVERYTHING beautifully. I’ve been listening for only a few days and already on episode 42! I can’t wait t... more
I’ve only finished the first episode, but as a huge LotR fan it’s actually a lot better than I expected. It goes in depth but is still sort of easy to understand. I
haven’t listened to any of his other podcasts, but so far this is great and I’m excited to have something new to listen to. Also find it funny he thinks there will only be around forty episodes and there’s like 250 lol.
I somehow discovered this podcast just as my life took some rather unexpected turns and it’s been such an amazing aid for me in darker times. The text is so beautifully spoken and interpreted. And I kind of feel like I’m best friends with tom even though he’ll never know who I am😭. I’m so grateful for the effort you’ve put into this over the years!
I’ve been binge listening to all the episodes for nearly 2 months ago now and just want to say how amazing this is made. I recently went to Florida too and was thinking how amazing would a lord of the rings theme park be like the ones in universal. Love the work keep it up robots.

A deeply analytical lore show that explores Tolkien's legendarium from its creation myths through The Rings of Power and beyond, with a focus on detailed close-reading, symbolism, and cross-text connections. Episodes thread together character history, cosmology, and narrative foreshadowing, often returning to core themes like mercy, power, and the burden of responsibility. The host-articulated approach combines thorough textual analysis with accessible explanations, making complex mythic material approachable for dedicated fans and newcomers alike. The format consistently emphasizes rigor, clear explanations, and a strong sense of community around long-form lore study, with occasional patron-driven content that deepens audience engagement a... more
