  • Advocacy Without Balance

I’m a strong supporter of GLP-1s and take Zepbound, so I appreciate the intent behind this podcast.

That said, the execution makes it hard to listen. The tone often drifts into rambling, and the guest mix leans heavily pro-compounding without much nuance around the real tradeoffs.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

GLP-1s, Bariatric Surgery & the Uncomfortable Truth About Eating Disorders
Q: What should someone do if they experience regain after GLP-1 or bariatric treatment?
Regain should be viewed as a signal to reassess lifestyle, stress, hormonal changes, and environmental factors. Recommending a return to fundamentals—adequate protein, balanced fats and fiber, regular movement—and revisiting medical labs and support from a dietitian or therapist can help re-establish progress.
GLP-1s, Bariatric Surgery & the Uncomfortable Truth About Eating Disorders
Q: What role does permission-based communication play in discussing weight and related behaviors with patients?
Asking for permission to discuss weight helps patients feel safe and respected, reducing defensiveness and increasing openness. It improves the quality of information clinicians receive, allowing for better, collaborative decision-making.
GLP-1s, Bariatric Surgery & the Uncomfortable Truth About Eating Disorders
Q: How can clinicians better detect eating disorders in higher-weight patients who may be missing from traditional screening?
Clinicians should directly ask about daily eating patterns, restriction, and purging, not just weight loss progress. Using formal screenings for eating disorders and adverse childhood experiences, and ensuring clinicians across disciplines collaborate with specialists when red flags appear, helps identify issues that might otherwise be missed.
GLP-1s, Bariatric Surgery & the Uncomfortable Truth About Eating Disorders
Q: What is orthorexia and why is it particularly relevant for people undergoing bariatric surgery or GLP-1 treatment?
Orthorexia is an extreme form of eating restriction with rigid rules that can prevent flexible, balanced eating. In the context of bariatric surgery or GLP-1 treatment, it can lead to overly restrictive patterns that undermine long-term health and enjoyment of food, making it harder to sustain healthy changes. Clinicians warn against rigid dieting and encourage nuanced eating plans that allow occasional pleasure and variety.
GLP-1 Over 60: Obesity Doctor Explains Part 2
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about who you are and how you help people?
Dr. Lindsey Ogle explains her background in family medicine and obesity medicine, highlighting how treating obesity as a multifactorial chronic condition can improve overall health beyond just weight loss, and the importance of individualized care and long-term support.
