  • Super podcast on thru hiking and other outdoor sports

As a fellow Coloradan and thru hiker, I love listening to Chad Lubinski’s podcasts - as well as watching his YouTube videos. Chad gives awesome info that’s entertainingly presented! I’m learning a ton and having a lot of laughs and inspiration from Chad. - Rolf Asphaug aka Kinnikinnick (previous guest on Backpacker Radio and Jester Section Hiker podcasts; CT 2021, Collegiate Loop 2022, BMT 2023, JMT -I hope! - 2024).

  • Highly recommend

I’m a new listener of this podcast but have been following Chad’s IG for a while. I had to come write a review after listening to episode #33. I was blown away by the Krakauer quote Chad cited, alongside Chad’s knowledge, analysis and vulnerability throughout. This episode was particularly relevant for me. Will continue listening on those long commutes!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#168 - He Served 31 Years in the Air Force… Then the PCT Changed Him | Jason France
Q: What role did family play in your decisions to hike the PCT and later to write the book?
Family acted as a catalyst and support system. My wife encouraged me to take on the PCT, and my younger son spurred me to write 5 Million Steps by asking what I enjoyed most about the trail and what it could teach others. Their belief helped me push beyond doubt and share the journey openly.
#168 - He Served 31 Years in the Air Force… Then the PCT Changed Him | Jason France
Q: How did your military experiences shape your approach to obstacles on the trail, especially during NorCal?
Military training built mental fortitude and problem-solving under stress, but NorCal forced me to face trauma without distractions. I learned to sit with difficult memories, accept what I could not change, and focus on immediate actions—continuing forward with purpose rather than dwelling on the past.
#168 - He Served 31 Years in the Air Force… Then the PCT Changed Him | Jason France
Q: Tell me a little bit more about that shift from a highly structured military life to the PCT—how did you navigate the transition?
The shift was gradual but intense. I retired from a senior role, then immediately stepped into the trail where there was no boss to tell me what to do; I had to relearn self-direction, balance, and curiosity. The key was embracing the present moment, allowing daily experiences to define the pace, and recognizing that mental preparation matters as much as physical training.
#161 - Turning Outdoor Filmmaking Into a Business (What Most Creators Miss) w/ Chase Christopher
Q: What advice would you give someone interested in filming?
Focus on the story and the value offering, as it is more important than the technical aspects.
#157 - Watch THIS Before Hiking the Appalachian Trail
Q: What did you feel like when you were finishing the Appalachian Trail?
It was a mix of nervousness and excitement, realizing I accomplished this massive goal for myself, and I couldn't believe I made it to Katahdin, especially after everything I went through.
