As a long-time Lighting Camera Operator (documentary, branded etc) who’s trying to forge a path in the narrative world, I have found Dave’s podcast such an important and inspiring resource. Being able to listen to the various journeys other Operators have gone through is so valuable to keeping on track. Also having the expertly-curated content libraries and being able to study shot breakdowns, masterclasses and other useful materials gives me to ability go get ahead of some challenges that one w... more
As an OP myself, there are many times, while listening, where I exclaim, “spot on!”; sometimes out loud. And I am often reacting to the politics of a set, the psychological aspects of our job, or the relationships Dave and the other Ops talk about. Of course I love the technical talk, and the deep diving conversations about the art of it all, but it’s refreshing to hear about the stuff going on behind, behind the scenes. For every moment I find myself relating to a topic, I also hear something t... more
The Op is the film school I wish I had when I started as an operator. So much great information for the beginner but even as an operator further along in my career there is still so much knowledge to be learned from this podcast. Lots of great episodes to choose from already but Peter Rosenfeld’s episode is a great place to sink your teeth in first if you don’t know where to start. 5 stars and 2 thumbs!!!
When I was first starting out, I was so hungry for any tool that would help me learn. Being able to hear the stories, observations, techniques and experiences of people who have been successfully working in this business is so valuable, and The Op makes it easy and entertaining. Dave has done a remarkable job of pulling together people with different backgrounds, approaches and experiences who are really generous with their time and wisdom. This is a terrific learning opportunity, and I am pro... more
I’m biased as i work in this bizarre industry myself, but if you’re looking for an honest insight into what makes the camera department (and other departments) in film and TV operate coherently (or sometimes not) this is what you’ve been looking for. No lingering geekiness about equipment and how this and that piece of new kit are all it takes to make it, if you just watch a few youtube videos. Just really informative and entertaining interviews with long standing industry professionals who have... more
