  • Amazing Resource

I could never speak highly enough of this podcast.

I’ve spent 15 years as a camera assistant and my dream has always been to operate. I’ve never found comfort to start making the jump with older ac’s either telling me I can’t or me getting in my own way believing I couldn’t. Dave’s podcast broke down a lot of mental barriers I had. Hearing stories of how people made the jump, dealt with failure, and learned to keep growing has instilled so much confidence in me. While I’ve still got a lot to le... more

  • Really helpful !

I’m so glad my teacher recommended us this podcast because I can put myself in the shoes of a cinematographer and better understand my role and my job. It’s like getting to learn from the inside of the industry and experiencing these little situation or inconvenience myself.

As a cinematographer, why would you not want to be associated with some type of content (horror, gore). Ain’t the goal being successful and not miss on opportunities? or is more like a personal thing.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Operator Ari Issler
Q: When did you feel you could jump onto any camera and be proficient?
It happened gradually as I learned that different shoots require different approaches, and true proficiency comes from understanding what the director and DP need from you, adjusting your role shot by shot.
Operator Paul Edwards
Q: So how did you get into the business?
Paul Edwards describes a formative path starting with a BBC apprenticeship in camera, a move to the Netherlands, and eventually discovering Steadicam, driven by curiosity, engineering mindset, and a passion for hands-on learning; the journey included a pivotal Steadicam course and early freelance work that kept growing from local TV to big features.
Writer/Director Phil Alden Robinson
Q: How important was collaboration with the DP and production designer in developing your voice as a director?
Essential; it helped him align the film's look with the story and keep the crew cohesive, especially during early prep and on-set blocking.
Writer/Director Phil Alden Robinson
Q: How did you approach moving from smaller projects to directing a Hollywood feature?
By learning from mentors, choosing projects with personal resonance, and recognizing the value of surrounding yourself with skilled collaborators who can elevate the work.
Actor Ferdinand Kingsley
Q: What is your view on training for screen acting versus stage acting, and how has it affected your career?
He notes that theatre training provides a strong foundation but screen acting requires adapting the instincts, including working with repetition, directors, and crew. He acknowledges drama school as valuable but not the only path, and highlights the ongoing learning from working with top crews and replaying scenes to refine craft.
