  • Islam 101

Excellent discussion and insight into Islam, especially countering the ideas that fundamentalist Christians have introduced. Having spent a summer in my youth living with a Muslim family I appreciate Qasim’s clear explanations of his faith. We need this dialogue! Thank you!

  • God had a plan

How can you believe in demi gods (which everyone already knows is mentioned in the Bible) but one God is totally absurd?

How can Eden (a paradise where you literally pick food off trees to eat, except for one) be a place where God needed Adam and Eve to slave for Him in The Garden? How can you go from being a Christian to thinking the devil is really a good guy and God is really the bad guy who condones slavery and genocide?

God had a plan, because he knew we would mess up, and that's Jesu... more

I checked out The New Evangelicals hoping for genuine critique and nuance, but it’s just evangelical dogma swapped for progressive dogma. They’ve traded Bible Belt fundamentalism for woke fundamentalism, now preaching left-wing talking points dressed up as theology. Instead of sticking to their brand of progressive Christianity, they dive into politics—encouraging third-party voting and treating “Christian nationalism” like the ultimate evil—while completely ignoring Israeli power and the Torah’... more

428. How to Overcome Religious Trauma
Q: How should people navigate social media's role in healing and the therapist landscape online?
She acknowledges both benefits and pitfalls of online spaces, notes the need for critical discernment about therapist-identity online, and argues that intention vs. impact matters—apologies may be necessary when harm occurs, but building solid relationships offline remains crucial.
428. How to Overcome Religious Trauma
Q: What practical steps can someone take to begin healing from religious trauma, especially regarding identity and relationships?
Neely stresses the importance of relational healing, finding a compatible therapist, building healthy communities (including chosen families), and gradually forming an identity that is not defined solely by religious experiences, with an emphasis on multiple sources of meaning and ongoing self-discovery.
428. How to Overcome Religious Trauma
Q: How do you define trauma or religious trauma, given the spectrum of experiences in religious contexts?
She describes trauma as a spectrum and explains her focus on complex PTSD within religious trauma, highlighting how high-control religions shape neural wiring and attachment, and how deconstructing belief involves reparenting and changing thought patterns.
428. How to Overcome Religious Trauma
Q: Tell me a little bit about yourself and the work that you do and what got you into it.
Neely explains she's a therapist who runs an LGBT+-affirming practice, specializes in religious trauma, and shifted from writing romance novels to clinical work; she emphasizes helping clients untangle how beliefs were taught rather than what they believe, using a trauma-informed, neurological lens.
422. Faith Unlynched with Dr. Angela Parker
Q: What can listeners do to counter white Christian nationalism in practical terms?
The conversation highlights following the Black liberation tradition, engaging in allyship that puts bodies on the line with marginalized communities, and fostering a more holistic, contextual reading of scripture rather than monolithic interpretations.
