  • Great podcast!

Hi. Love your stuff. John Dominic Crossen is a favorite. Love Beau and the graphs as well. Found out today that I have been accepted into discernment to become a woman Roman Catholic priest. I need to complete 33 college credits in theology. I don’t necessarily need a degree but it might be a nice bonus prize. I live in Rhode Island and work full time as a veterinarian so it may take me a while. Wondering if you have suggestions for online not boring and progressive Christianity classes. I can p... more

  • Capitulation To Empire

I used to love this show. It is what brought me back to the church, and the reason I’m about to finish my MDiv. But I can’t believe how much AI Tripp now uses in audio essays, emails, and podcast descriptions. For someone who talks so much about relationship and anti imperialism, it is astonishing that he would be so inauthentic. I would never feel comfortable publishing anything that is so obviously written primarily by an LLM. Disappointing. I legitimately feel disrespected as a former fan. No... more

  • I like it, even when I don’t understand it

This is a true statement, but is motivated by my desire to not be review-shamed by Tripp the next time we drink beer together.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

James Cone Was Right: Gary Dorrien & Charlene Sinclair on Black Theology, the Lynching Tree & the Cry We Keep Not Hearing
Q: How did Cone's experience with the Black Church and his streets-level beginnings shape his theology?
Cone's early life and activism grounded his theology in the lived experiences of oppression, insisting that theology must confront structural racism rather than stay in esoteric academic discourse.
Preaching in the WTF Zone: Leah Schade on Saying Something True When the News Will Not Stop
Q: How should pastors handle criticism or pushback after addressing tough issues?
Begin with listening, validate emotions, avoid defensiveness, and invite the coworking of the conversation. Use a walk-and-talk or a calm setting to hear concerns, then respond with questions and biblical grounding to move toward constructive action.
Preaching in the WTF Zone: Leah Schade on Saying Something True When the News Will Not Stop
Q: What does the invitational sermon dialogue look like in practice?
It starts with bringing people together across differences, using a non-partisan issue guide, sharing personal impact stories, outlining potential values, and then crafting a follow-up communal discernment sermon that reflects what the community heard and decided to do next.
Preaching in the WTF Zone: Leah Schade on Saying Something True When the News Will Not Stop
Q: Could you just give a definition of what you mean by preaching prophetically?
Prophetic preaching is broader than a single aggressive tone; it includes naming systemic issues, addressing harms, and doing so in a way that is pastorally attentive, inviting dialogue, and grounded in gospel values rather than simply condemning an audience. It incorporates pastoral care, accountability to the community, and the possibility of growth and reconciliation.
Sacred Values and Street Power — The Theology of Organizing
Q: How did you first become an organizer and what drew you in?
Personal origin stories include grassroots campaigns like the George McGovern for President run, which taught the speaker the importance of organized, sustained political action and the transformation of service into leadership development.
