  • Great Podcast

I look forward to every episode. One note however, the host has the mic too close to her mouth sometimes and I can hear every noise she makes when the guest is speaking. It can get distracting sometimes. Other than that it’s fantastic!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

(Bonus) Fear and Fury: The Reagan Eighties, the Bernie Goetz Shootings, and the Rebirth of White Rage with Heather Ann Thompson
Q: What is the core takeaway you want listeners to have after reading Fear and Fury?
That the 1980s were not just a backdrop, but a turning point in how Americans understand crime, race, government, and truth, and that understanding this history is vital to navigating today's political and media landscape.
(Bonus) Fear and Fury: The Reagan Eighties, the Bernie Goetz Shootings, and the Rebirth of White Rage with Heather Ann Thompson
Q: How did your research process differ from Blood in the Water?
Fear and Fury benefited from more accessible archival materials in some respects, but it also required integrating the Goetz narrative with a broader analysis of media ecosystems and the political economy of the era; I aimed to balance the eyewitness and victim perspectives with a larger historical arc.
(Bonus) Fear and Fury: The Reagan Eighties, the Bernie Goetz Shootings, and the Rebirth of White Rage with Heather Ann Thompson
Q: What drew you to this particular case and topic for Fear and Fury?
I wanted to understand not just the sensational act, but the larger social and political machinery—the media, policy shifts, and public fears—that allowed this incident to become a political moment and a reflection of its time.
Whack Job: A History of Axe Murder with Rachel McCarthy James
Q: Did the research reveal any surprising truths about the axe's symbolism across cultures?
Yes, the discussion highlights how the axe appears as a symbol of power, home, ritual, and even femininity in different contexts, challenging simple associations with masculinity and violence.
Whack Job: A History of Axe Murder with Rachel McCarthy James
Q: Was Lizzie Borden always going to be part of the book given how well-known her case is?
Yes, but the author approached it with a fresh angle, aiming to balance public fascination with new context and avoid repetition, ultimately finding value in analyzing how the case intersects with media portrayals and judicial history.
