The Wonderful Lynne McGranger on the Joys of Grandparenting
Q: Are you a grandmother yourself, Lynne?
Lynne says she is not yet a grandmother but remains hopeful, and she and her partner look forward to that possibility in the future.
Grandparenting and Music: With Special Guest – The Wiggles’ Paul Field
Q: Tell us one more story about Felix at the Wente Club and how that moment demonstrates the power of music in grandparenting.
Felix's moments on stage and at family events show how a child's genuine engagement with music can become a shared family memory, illustrating how grandparents can create special, lasting experiences through performance and participation.
Grandparenting and Music: With Special Guest – The Wiggles’ Paul Field
Q: What impact did that early family and school music exposure have on the Wiggles' journey and on grandparenting through music?
The experience shaped a life-long commitment to making music accessible and meaningful for children, with an emphasis on simple, engaging songs that connect with kids at all stages, which in turn informs how grandparents can use music to bond and teach.
Navigating Generational Conflict and Repair In Our Families
Q: In your work, Jenny, you distinguished three types of reactions to conflict. Attack, defend and distance. Now, while I'm sure you've observed or experienced, both professionally and personally, each of them, I guess because people are trying to defend themselves. But I'm interested in your thinking on where they come from, and also how do we handle conflict better?
They come from triggers and anxiety within the relationship system; noticing one's own trigger points and history helps. The goal is to reduce reactivity by understanding patterns and choosing to repair rather than escalate, since many conflicts stem from long-standing dynamics rather than a single cause.
