  • Great resource

The topics on this program are wide, raging and very interesting, especially for entrepreneurs. While I am retired and not really doing anything entrepreneurial, I just listened to the interview of Melissa Schilling, and it was so much fun. I would highly recommend it. The dialogue provides plenty of meat for everyone, including parents, who want to encourage their children to feel free to be innovative and adventuresome.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

467. Why JFK’s Bay of Pigs Mistakes May Have Saved the World, with Dr. Kaushik Basu and Host Dan Hesse
Q: Do you think one of those policy options might be universal basic income?
I envision a hybrid model with profit sharing where a portion of national profits is distributed to citizens, rather than a flat universal basic income, to preserve work incentives while sharing prosperity.
467. Why JFK’s Bay of Pigs Mistakes May Have Saved the World, with Dr. Kaushik Basu and Host Dan Hesse
Q: When you moved from research to practice, was that an easy transition for you, and did anything surprise you?
The transition was challenging at first, requiring me to adopt a learning mindset similar to anthropology—absorbing the new environment, policies, and norms, then gradually applying rigorous reasoning to policy advice.
467. Why JFK’s Bay of Pigs Mistakes May Have Saved the World, with Dr. Kaushik Basu and Host Dan Hesse
Q: Related to that, as a business leader, and I'm going to ask you, are there lessons that business leaders can learn from this?
Yes. Leaders should recognize the difference between individual incentives and group or company-wide outcomes, cultivate ethical norms, and align compensation and culture with long-term value rather than purely short-term gains.
465. How Mentors helped Ginni Rometty become Fortune’s “#1 Most Powerful Woman”, with Host Dan Hesse
Q: What is good power and what does being in service of mean?
Good power involves tackling tough problems with respect and celebrating progress over perfection, emphasizing the importance of serving clients and stakeholders.
465. How Mentors helped Ginni Rometty become Fortune’s “#1 Most Powerful Woman”, with Host Dan Hesse
Q: How do you define the word success?
Rometty defines success today as being present for the people that matter in her life, shifting from a focus on company success to personal connections.
