Why this Protestant Pastor Became a Catholic
Q: How did your family react to your decision to become Catholic?
There was significant strain, including my wife questioning her own faith and ultimately leaving the faith, which was a painful but revealing part of the process.
Why this Protestant Pastor Became a Catholic
Q: What role did the Catechism and Church Fathers play in your discernment?
They provided authoritative context that helped me see a continuity of belief from the ancient church to today, clarifying misunderstandings and showing that the Catholic interpretation aligned with historic Christianity.
Why this Protestant Pastor Became a Catholic
Q: What was the biggest hurdle for you when you were considering Catholicism?
The most challenging aspects were understanding how the Eucharist functions in Catholic theology and reconciling that with the view I had grown up with, which eventually opened me to deeper study of the early church and church authority.
Why this Protestant Pastor Became a Catholic
Q: So you, Justin, you used to be an Evangelical pastor. Is that right?
Yes, I spent many years in Evangelical and Calvinist circles, including as a pastor, and I began to question how all the pieces of history fit together, which led me toward exploring Catholic teaching and the early church.
Missionary becomes Catholic and loses friends. But God stepped in…
Q: Was it difficult to reconcile your upbringing with Catholic doctrine, especially Marian dogmas?
Yes, it was a challenging shift. The Marian dogmas initially seemed antithetical to my previous beliefs, but examining early Church teachings, writings of the Fathers, and the aim of safeguarding Christology helped me see their purpose as defending Jesus's divinity rather than elevating Mary, which eased the transition.
