Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

To dance is to resist: queer life in wartime Ukraine
Q: Resistance is at the heart of the film. How did you balance portraying the domestic life with the discipline of dance and the public performance in a war-torn city?
By treating Kyiv as a constant presence and giving equal weight to domestic scenes, rehearsals, and performances. This balance reveals how the couple and their community endure, adapt, and find meaning through artistic expression even under bombardment and blackouts.
To dance is to resist: queer life in wartime Ukraine
Q: Very exciting. So congratulations on the world premiere—could you tell us a little about how you met Jay and Voldemort and started working with Kyiv's queer dance community?
I approached the project from a personal, long-term engagement, moving to Kyiv in late 2021, building trust through frequent club visits, and slowly becoming part of the community. The war forced a shift in focus, but the core idea remained: to explore resistance through daily life, intimate relationships, and the art of dance rather than military confrontation.
Building film culture in Uzbekistan
Q: Could you outline the work that you and Michael do day to day and the projects you're involved in?
Julia describes running the Tashkent Film School, co-producing with Michael Borodin, developing films in various stages, and mentoring a generation of young filmmakers through a democratic, low-budget education model.
Sergei Parajanov in love and war
Q: How does a cosmopolitan guy like Sergei Parajanov become so important for specific individual nations like Armenia?
Zara reflects on her own journey and how Parajanov's work resonates with the essence of Armenian culture and helps her reconnect with her roots.
Sergei Parajanov in love and war
Q: Could you maybe take us back to that moment in 2022 and your decision to return to Armenia from Russia?
Zara Jian discusses her decision influenced by her experience of the Artsakh war and the realization that she needed to confront her feelings through art rather than aggression.
