  • Makes me excited to watch movies

Even though Rapold is a film buff the show is the opposite of film hipsterism, there’s a real curiosity to all kinds of film along with a strong knowledge of the fundamentals

  • The Last Thing I Listened To

This is a great show. Simple set-up and all about the quality of the critics, which feels pretty high quality to me. A good range of movies covered. Quite festival oriented, and skews towards US a little, so I won’t always listen if most of what’s being covered there’s fat chance any of it ever coming out in my little piece of the world.

Then again, there’s always the fall back of streamers - aka the enemy.

Anyway, I wonder if the festival circuit is a phenomenon I don’t quite understand and c... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 396: Eric Hynes on Cannes 2026: Club Kid, The Beloved (El Ser Querido), Clarissa, Propeller One-Way Night Coach
Q: What drew you to Clarissa and how does it reinterpret Mrs. Dalloway for a contemporary setting?
Clarissa unfolds through a slow-burn, multi-era presentation where characters reappear across timelines, ultimately building a complex social tapestry that feels both timeless and very much of its milieu.
Ep. 396: Eric Hynes on Cannes 2026: Club Kid, The Beloved (El Ser Querido), Clarissa, Propeller One-Way Night Coach
Q: How does Club Kid evolve in its second half and what does that say about the film's ambitions?
The second half morphs into a multi-genre blend, smoothly integrating elements of 80s- and 90s-inspired cinema, and its audacious shift underscores the film's willingness to surprise while still staying rooted in its lead character's emotional journey.
Ep. 396: Eric Hynes on Cannes 2026: Club Kid, The Beloved (El Ser Querido), Clarissa, Propeller One-Way Night Coach
Q: What was the first film of the day you wanted to discuss?
We started with Club Kid, noting its debut by Jordan Firstman and its arc from club-culture energy to a more mature, custody-influenced drama, including a striking use of tone and a surprising courtroom pivot.
Ep. 398: Chloe Lizotte on Cannes 2026: Minotaur, Fjord, Full Phil and Tim Heidecker, Hope
Q: How did Minotaur look and feel to you?
Minotaur reads as a lean, focused thriller with a stark, fast-moving narrative, but the aesthetics—particularly the white space and camera work—give it a chilling edge, making the performance and framing feel uneasily controlled despite the intensity.
Ep. 398: Chloe Lizotte on Cannes 2026: Minotaur, Fjord, Full Phil and Tim Heidecker, Hope
Q: What did you think of Hope?
I found it to be a kid-in-a-candied-cage experience where the monster appears and disappears, delivering a mix of wonder and confusion, with the creature design and eye work standing out even as some sections feel more like a showreel than a fully cohesive narrative.
