  • Makes me excited to watch movies

Even though Rapold is a film buff the show is the opposite of film hipsterism, there’s a real curiosity to all kinds of film along with a strong knowledge of the fundamentals

  • The Last Thing I Listened To

This is a great show. Simple set-up and all about the quality of the critics, which feels pretty high quality to me. A good range of movies covered. Quite festival oriented, and skews towards US a little, so I won’t always listen if most of what’s being covered there’s fat chance any of it ever coming out in my little piece of the world.

Then again, there’s always the fall back of streamers - aka the enemy.

Anyway, I wonder if the festival circuit is a phenomenon I don’t quite understand and c... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep. 407: K.J. Relth-Miller on Cannes Classics 2026: La Dérive, The Devils, Report to Mother, Moonlighting, Tilai, The Pelechian Project
Q: Where do you go after The Devils?
The hosts segue to another classic, Report to Mother, and then to Tilai and La Dérive, exploring how different contexts—Indian cinema, New Wave aesthetics, and 1960s European drama—shape what audiences see next in a Cannes Classics lineup.
Ep. 408: Tubi programmer Ryan Lavalette on The In-Laws, Magic, 20 Questions, Arlington Road, Scorpio, Captain Ron, Report to the Commissioner, Skinamarink
Q: Tell us about Magic, and why it fits into your horror/cult library?
Lavallette describes Magic as a standout 70s horror/psychological thriller with a distinctive autumnal feel, noting Anthony Hopkins's unusual puppeteer role and the film's texture, which makes it a great example of how Tubi curates a deep library of genre titles for discovery.
Ep. 408: Tubi programmer Ryan Lavalette on The In-Laws, Magic, 20 Questions, Arlington Road, Scorpio, Captain Ron, Report to the Commissioner, Skinamarink
Q: But like, yeah, for example, how did The In-Laws come into Tubi?
Lavallette explains that Tubi leverages strong relationships with Warner Brothers and uses licensing and rev share to bring in classic and evergreen titles, especially older skewing content, and highlights that these titles align with the platform's DNA of niche and beloved favorites.
Ep. 396: Eric Hynes on Cannes 2026: Club Kid, The Beloved (El Ser Querido), Clarissa, Propeller One-Way Night Coach
Q: What drew you to Clarissa and how does it reinterpret Mrs. Dalloway for a contemporary setting?
Clarissa unfolds through a slow-burn, multi-era presentation where characters reappear across timelines, ultimately building a complex social tapestry that feels both timeless and very much of its milieu.
Ep. 396: Eric Hynes on Cannes 2026: Club Kid, The Beloved (El Ser Querido), Clarissa, Propeller One-Way Night Coach
Q: How does Club Kid evolve in its second half and what does that say about the film's ambitions?
The second half morphs into a multi-genre blend, smoothly integrating elements of 80s- and 90s-inspired cinema, and its audacious shift underscores the film's willingness to surprise while still staying rooted in its lead character's emotional journey.
