  • Clearly Biased Reporting

I used to be a regular subscriber of the economist and read the publications in print regularly. I respected what I thought was a news platform that focused on facts and science based decision making. This podcast is nothing like that, it’s focused on attacking America and the decisions it makes almost every episode. facts be damned! The bias is clear and for someone that just wants a quick objective view of the world events daily, this is failing. Especially the episode where you called De Niro... more

  • Please choose your advertisers more wisely

I listen to The Intelligence regularly and enjoy the reporting and factual journalism. What I do not enjoy is hearing political advertising especially pro Trump propaganda that is most definitely NOT factual.

  • Under Chavez

Listening to this episode today and the guest can’t help but try and sneak in the lie about the people “suffering” under Hugo Chavez. This about a man who reduced poverty more than anybody in the history of their country and was extremely popular. The economist is and always will be western propaganda. Perhaps the people of Venezuela would have been better off if the Bank of England hadn’t stolen their gold reserves. Interesting how they just gloss over all the US sanctions too, which have cripp... more

  • Thank you

Thank you for keeping me informed, entertained,

    and even occasionally delighted

Today’s piece on the penny by Ann Wroe gave me the delight of hearing one of her incredibly well crafted stories of a life, without the remorse knowing that that particular person’s story has ended. What a lovely way to start a New Year.

  • One of the best

One of my favourite podcasts. Not really a keen follower of economics but these offer far more than that. Really well produced and presented and almost all of the stuff they cover is really interesting.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Strait of shock: Iran economic fallout
Q: So what other options are there?
Other options include continuing to release oil from strategic reserves and leveraging Russia's oil under waivers to alleviate price pressures, though these trade-offs must balance against longer-term geopolitical aims and market expectations.
Strait of shock: Iran economic fallout
Q: As you said, there was discussion yesterday that maybe a ship had gone through the Strait of Hormuz. Is it a possibility that there may be some accompaniment, better protection of ships, that they could then go through?
The discussion centers on whether naval escorts could practically safeguard traffic through Hormuz, with historical precedents in the 1980s showing escorts but also highlighting that at current traffic levels the process would be slow and costly, and may not be an easy solution.
Lone goals: will US-Israel war aims diverge?
Q: What would be the implications for Netanyahu if Trump diverges from Israel's aims in Iran?
Netanyahu could face domestic political fallout and questions about what has actually been achieved in the war, especially if regime change remains unrealized and regional perceptions shift toward a stalemate or Iranian resilience.
Lone goals: will US-Israel war aims diverge?
Q: So what happens if essentially the two countries continue to pursue or continue to talk about these divergent war aims?
There will eventually be an argument over how to end the war, even if it does not break out into the open, as each side weighs its preferred off ramp and desired outcomes, creating sustained, but covert tensions between Israel and the United States.
The third Gulf war: one week on
Q: Should they continue bombing or should they stop?
The editors debated that once you start, you should aim to finish at least one aspect, specifically degrading Iran's missile batteries to limit further nuclear or military escalation.
