Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

InnerViews – Healing, Masculinity & The Stories We Tell Ourselves
Q: What changes do you hope to see in the child welfare system in your lifetime?
The guest advocates for stability and long-term support, two-parent foster homes where possible, and broader reform to ensure continued support after emancipation, arguing for a safer, more structured environment and sustained investment in youth after they leave formal care.
The Sun Keeps Rising, with Christopher Baker-Scott
Q: What are the two main points at which students join SUN Scholars, and how do you decide when to engage with them?
Most students are already accepted to college when they join, typically entering the program in the summer before freshman year or when they have struggled later in college; SUN Scholars engages to provide resources and coaching to help them stay on track and succeed, emphasizing ongoing support over simply tutoring.
The Dark Past of Sterilization and the Bright Future for Birth Justice
Q: How did you find Patty Jo King and Siobhan Stevens, and what was it like building relationships over years?
Patty Jo King connected early on; the journalist cultivated this relationship for years, keeping in touch and waiting for the grant to proceed. Siobhan Stevens contributed as a central lived-experience voice in day two, shaping the narrative with her personal story.
The Dark Past of Sterilization and the Bright Future for Birth Justice
Q: Could you tell our audience the origin story of this project and how it came to be?
The project began a decade ago after a headline about government admissions of sterilizing Native American women caught the journalist by surprise, leading to survivor Patty Jo King sharing her experiences and eventually the partner initiative funded by USC Annenberg to deeply document the history and current impacts.
From the Barber’s Chair to the BRO Experience, with Barry Cooper
Q: Why CBT as the core model for BRO, especially for young men of color?
CBT is practical, crosses racial lines, and helps participants reframe thoughts and behaviors, enabling healthier relationships and decision-making under stress.
