  • Fascinating

The Crandall interview was excellent! Brought back memories of the 90’s in Colombia when Xtrata and Glencore entered the coal market with such (perceived) reckless abandon! And kudos to Mr. Crandall for his candor and willingness to share intimate details of the Marc Rich origin story. Nicely done Paul!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Whale Oil with Eric Jay Dolin (Summer Repeat)
Q: Can you give us a sense of the economics and scale of the American whaling industry in the 1850s?
The industry boasted around 900 whale ships globally, with about 760 American, led by New Bedford; voyages lasted roughly four years on average, with long lays for higher profits and a clear hierarchy in pay that incentivized risk-taking for the upper ranks.
De-Dollarization, Debasement & Diversification: Precious Metals with Nicky Shiels
Q: And was the US-Iran war just a setback to those prices or the end of a bull market?
The guest notes the war acted as a counterpoint that monetized certain price levels and amplified liquidity effects, but the broader narrative remains that gold is functioning as a hedge and liquidity asset in times of geopolitical stress, with both upswings and pullbacks tied to risk sentiment and central-bank actions.
De-Dollarization, Debasement & Diversification: Precious Metals with Nicky Shiels
Q: Today, we're talking gold, silver, and the platinum group metals. What drove the huge run up in prices for all of them in 2025 and into 2026?
The discussion centers on three interacting trends—de-dollarization, a debasement/dollar-denominated asset environment, and a diversification motive. These forces act as structural drivers, with central bank buying and inflation dynamics helping push gold and silver higher, while PGMs benefit from industrial demand and strategic stockpiling amid de-globalization pressures.
Why is oil so cheap? With David Wech
Q: Can you quantify how much of the 6 million barrels per day increase in US and regional exports is due to SPR releases, and how long that can continue?
Approximately 1 million barrels per day of the increase can be attributed to SPR releases; the SPR could be drawn down for several months to about half a year depending on political decisions and strategic considerations.
Why is oil so cheap? With David Wech
Q: Have we actually seen that shipping maneuvering and oil flow change happen as described? Has it stopped?
Yes, flows have shifted with UAE leading the effort and Iraq and Kuwait joining, supported by US protection, helping to offset Iranian losses and avoid a dramatic price spike.
