  • Fascinating

The Crandall interview was excellent! Brought back memories of the 90’s in Colombia when Xtrata and Glencore entered the coal market with such (perceived) reckless abandon! And kudos to Mr. Crandall for his candor and willingness to share intimate details of the Marc Rich origin story. Nicely done Paul!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

No Peace, No War and No Flows with Aldo Spanjer
Q: What signals should listeners watch to gauge whether a negotiated settlement is possible?
Shifts in negotiating positions that indicate willingness to compromise, evidence of easing tensions in Hormuz, and observable changes in physical stocks and flow restoration timelines are the key indicators to watch.
No Peace, No War and No Flows with Aldo Spanjer
Q: How might escalation versus de-escalation play out in terms of market prices and flows?
Escalation could lengthen outages and damage infrastructure, pushing prices higher and delaying normalization; de-escalation would trigger a sharp sell-off as futures curve reflates and ships return to market, followed by a period of rapid but temporary price normalization.
No Peace, No War and No Flows with Aldo Spanjer
Q: What is the current status of the crisis and its immediate impact on markets?
The situation remains in a tense, “frozen” state with ongoing negotiation attempts. The immediate impact is a gap between demand and supply due to restricted flows through Hormuz, leading to stock draws and higher near-term prices, while the market struggles to assess how long disruption will persist.
Tungsten with William Parry-Jones
Q: How is tungsten mined and traded, and what forms matter for the market?
He outlines two main ore types (wolframite and scheelite), the processing route to ammonium paratungstate (APT), and how APT serves as the trading unit before downstream conversion to WO3-rich products; he also notes that most trading is in APT with a standardized 88.5% WO3 content, and pricing is anchored off APT indices with downstream premiums.
Tungsten with William Parry-Jones
Q: What is tungsten and why does it have so many applications in today's society?
William explains tungsten's exceptional properties—high melting point, dense like gold, and hardness comparable to diamond when carbide is formed—which drive its widespread use in cutting, grinding, tooling, and military applications. The material's utility arises from its performance in high-temperature and high-stress environments.
