  • Fascinating

The Crandall interview was excellent! Brought back memories of the 90’s in Colombia when Xtrata and Glencore entered the coal market with such (perceived) reckless abandon! And kudos to Mr. Crandall for his candor and willingness to share intimate details of the Marc Rich origin story. Nicely done Paul!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Unearthing Alpha with a Metals Hedge Fund, with Matt Heap
Q: What makes metals and mining a compelling focus within a multi-strategy or sector-specialist fund?
Metals and mining offer exposed, long-cycle assets with megatrends like decarbonization and AI infrastructure driving demand, plus unique lead times and supply dynamics that can create asymmetric opportunities for specialized managers.
Unearthing Alpha with a Metals Hedge Fund, with Matt Heap
Q: So what exactly does a hedge fund mean today, and how does it differ from the traditional idea of a hedge fund?
A hedge fund today is a private capital pool where the manager has mandate to seek absolute returns across markets, using long and short positions to navigate up, down, or sideways markets, with a focus on risk-adjusted returns.
The Great CapEx Surge with Erikhans Kok
Q: What are the main bottlenecks in executing these massive capex programs, especially regarding labor and talent?
Labor shortages, aging skilled workforce, mobility constraints, and the need for new contracting models and camps for crews are key bottlenecks that threaten schedules and increases costs.
The Great CapEx Surge with Erikhans Kok
Q: Are we looking at a global capex cycle or is this concentrated in certain regions and sectors?
It's a global trend with broad sectoral coverage—data centers, infrastructure, energy, and life sciences—though the pace and mix vary by region due to policy, geopolitics, and access to capital.
The Great CapEx Surge with Erikhans Kok
Q: Can you just give us the meta picture there about why capex is rising across so many sectors?
Capital expenditures are rising because we need more capacity across energy, manufacturing, telecom, and data centers to support electrification, digital transformation, and global demand, with a strong push from both private and public capital to secure strategic assets.
