  • Great podcast

I just listened to the latest episode on lessons from Dr. Seuss! It was a great podcast! I got my degree in education but not a music teacher, and there was still great info that I could use in my daily life! It’s the perfect podcast to listen to while getting ready for the day or while driving to work/running errands!

The Power of the Arts: Three Ways to Grow Creativity
Q: Tell us what transformation means in your approach to general music education.
Transformation means intentionally connecting music with literature, STEM/STEAM, and other subjects so that music becomes a vehicle for deeper inquiry, not just a place for singing or playing classroom instruments. It requires planning, cross-disciplinary standards, and inviting stakeholders to witness the learning process.
Drum It Up, Strum It Up, and Mix It Up: Creative Music Activities for Elementary Music with Sandy and Gretchen
Q: What's your top tip for teachers under heavy stress to keep music education effective?
Focus on movement-rich, engaging activities, stay positive, communicate clearly with all stakeholders, and use small, manageable changes rather than overhauling lessons completely every day.
Drum It Up, Strum It Up, and Mix It Up: Creative Music Activities for Elementary Music with Sandy and Gretchen
Q: What keeps you motivated to keep creating and sharing resources for teachers?
A belief that creativity and movement can transform learning, a commitment to helping teachers feel less overwhelmed, and a drive to build a supportive community through the Happy Music Teacher Academy and ongoing professional development.
Drum It Up, Strum It Up, and Mix It Up: Creative Music Activities for Elementary Music with Sandy and Gretchen
Q: How did you two decide to start teaching together and what has that collaboration looked like over the years?
We began working together after one class was cut in a university adjunct program, which led us to combine our efforts and start teaching as a team; this collaboration evolved into joint courses, shared pedagogy, and a merged approach to teaching movement, recorder, and pedagogy across districts.
The Creative Act: Staying Inspired in the Music Room with Matt Shea
Q: What resources would you recommend for teachers who want to deepen their practice or pursue mentorship in Orff?
Matt highlights mentorship programs within AOSA, the archive resources (Orff Echo), and the new podcast initiative under the Virtual Programming Subcommittee, along with the value of live workshops and online content.
