  • Kind of a mixed bag

Some Episode are quite interesting and informative, some are more of a advertisement for companies and some are just blatant Chinese propaganda. That ones are especially disappointing.

  • Information overload

I’m a PhD student working in the molecular biology field yet find myself drowning in acronyms and esoteric terminology throughout these podcasts that totally cloud the take home messages. Totally wrong style for a podcast- for an academic review one can sit down and take notes on, yes. But for a podcast? Nooooooo

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Could protein biologics be a pioneering approach in ophthalmology?
Q: What are the near-term milestones for LB001 and LB004?
LB001 has progressed to scalable manufacturing and safety toxicology, with plans for clinical trials in the following year; LB004 is aimed at addressing subretinal fibrosis and potential subcutaneous administration, with a two-to-three year window before entering clinic.
Could protein biologics be a pioneering approach in ophthalmology?
Q: Why was dry eye disease chosen as the lead indication for LB001?
The choice was driven by a strong science-to-disease fit, where dry eye disease features a clear inflammatory cycle and a measurable lesion model, making it a suitable starting point to prove the concept before expanding to other indications.
Could a new weight loss approach have longer term benefits than GLP-1s?
Q: What are the key preclinical findings that give you confidence in this approach?
Preclinical data across multiple species show restored insulin sensitivity in the liver, reduced fatty liver and fibrosis, and importantly, a lipid signaling change that helps protect muscle from degradation during metabolic stress, implying both metabolic and muscle-sparing benefits.
Could a new weight loss approach have longer term benefits than GLP-1s?
Q: How does PATAS work, and why is it only active in diseased adipocytes?
PATAS mimics the insulin effect by re-establishing glucose absorption in adipocytes that are insulin resistant; in healthy adipocytes there is no effect because insulin signaling is already functioning, so PATAS acts specifically where the disease state exists to restore balance.
Could a new weight loss approach have longer term benefits than GLP-1s?
Q: What role does fat tissue dysfunction play in insulin resistance, and why is adipose biology central to this disease?
Adipose tissue is a key regulator of insulin resistance; when aging and other factors push adipose tissue toward lipid-dominant metabolism, unhealthy lipids spill over, driving whole-body insulin resistance and making adipose tissue dysfunction a central driver of metabolic disease.
