  • What’s with the giggling?

I love the Digiday content. Depending on my circumstances, I am subscribed or not. But when I listen to the podcast, while the content is right up my street, I find the banter and giggling most annoying. The current episode on Meta Superintelligence, NYT Amazon deal was one I was keen to listen to but gave up after 10 mins.

Have been a big fan of this podcast for a long time but finding the new hosts don't have the same insight and sparkle as Brian Morrissey. Needs a tune up to maintain its greatness.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How automation and AI are rewriting the upfront marketplace
Q: Are there concrete pilots showing AI agents' effectiveness in live negotiations?
Yes, there have been pilots (e.g., NBC Universal tests during NFL playoff games) demonstrating premium automation and AI-driven decision-making, though broader adoption is still developing and requires guardrails and context.
How automation and AI are rewriting the upfront marketplace
Q: What is driving the acceleration of automation in the upfront and programmatic spaces?
The shift is propelled by better data, real-time targeting capabilities, cost efficiencies, and the ability to forecast supply, with AI enabling faster decisions and more scalable execution, while preserving some human control for strategic decisions.
How automation and AI are rewriting the upfront marketplace
Q: When do you think AI agents will be leading upfront negotiations?
Most guests expect AI to lead in a couple of years, with a lot of the movement happening quickly but still requiring human oversight and guardrails.
The Netflix playbook: JBPs, programmatic power, and the future of the upfront deal
Q: Sam, given the upside of JBPs and the Ad Suite, do you think Netflix will eventually go fully self-serve with its own DSP, or will it continue to rely on third-party DSPs?
The blending approach seems most likely for now: Netflix has built a robust in-house ad tech stack (Ad Suite) to unlock broader inventory, while still maintaining compatibility with major DSPs to preserve reach. A fully own DSP could happen later if they secure enough unique inventory and demand-side control, but for the moment the hybrid model enables scale and flexibility.
OpenAI's ad push begins, and The Knot is co-piloting
Q: What does The Knot hope to learn from the pilot in terms of performance and brand impact?
Understanding how ChatGPT ad exposure translates to brand awareness, consideration, and ultimately vendor activity on Knot's platform, while recognizing this is an early learning phase and optimizing over time.
